I mash mine with potato, or carrot. Nice halloweeny food!

coleyboy · 19/10/2007 15:03

Mash with mashed potatoes.
Mash with mashed carrots.

Add lots of butter and pepper to both, yum yum.

Just spotted the phnar phnar potential of this thread title - pity the topic area gives it away

Great minds MrsMerton

SuperMonkey · 19/10/2007 15:03

That's what I would do (was going to suggest carrot). They are nice in casseroles.

shrooms · 19/10/2007 23:59

You can roast it with olive oil and sea salt, cumin and pepper.

MrsJohnCusack · 20/10/2007 00:03

oh poo was REALLY hoping this was the no sense of humour mango person so we could all post tasteless jokes and really annoy her

nappyaddict · 20/10/2007 00:54

swede, carrot and parsnip mash is lovely.

nappyaddict · 20/10/2007 00:54

swede, carrot and parsnip mash is lovely.

Swedes give soup a lovely texture and the flavour less intense than if you cook as a side-dish. Any combination of other veg, but would recommend potato and onion/leek as a base.

Skribble · 21/10/2007 22:18

They are turnips up here, but anyway I was going to suggest soup too, basic veg soup perhaps a bit of lentils, liquidise and it goes all creamy and gorgeous.

Would be nice mashed with sweet potato too, will need a bit more boiling though.

If roasting I would suggest parboiling before roasting.

My Grannie invented "Halloween Special' which basically was using the innerds from a swede (use the outer for a lantern) and then cook the swede chopped in small bits, make a cheese sauce, combine and bake for a bit! Add bacon if desired. Actually rather good.

seeker · 21/10/2007 22:23

No. Make a Halloween lantern out of it. Proper British tradition - not like these Johnny -come-lately pumpkins!
Or feed it to a passing cow - they love them.
Or make a pot of soup and give it to someone you hate as a present.

pointydog · 21/10/2007 22:33

cook it and mash it

Bewilderbeast · 21/10/2007 22:35

mash it with carrot.
put it in stew.

policywonk · 21/10/2007 22:37

Theres a great Cranks recipe for root vegetable stew in cider with cheddar dumplings - yum. In fact, now you've reminded me, that's dinner for tomorrow sorted. (If you want the recipe, let me know. The Cranks woman is very wordy and bossy so I'm not going to type it all out on the off-chance!)

pointydog · 21/10/2007 22:37

mash it with carrot.
put it in stew.
make a fine soup
it's good for you

fishie · 21/10/2007 22:43

it takes much longer to cook than sweet potatoes. better treated like parsnip.

cut it into largish lumps, boil/steam but not too soft, then put in saucepan wiht lid, bit of oil and herbs or spices of your choosing. some honey or syrup is nice too. low heat for about 5 mins do not burn it.

franch · 23/10/2007 11:01

Thanks for all the suggestions - have mashed it with carrots and sweet potatoes with a bit of thyme and nutmeg - delicious

Ooh who was the mango person MrsJC? What did I miss???

arfishy · 23/10/2007 11:39

Mango woman was hilariously humourless poster who needed advice on what to do with mangoes.

arfishy, I must confess to being a little disappointed at the lack of sauna jokes here. Maybe I preempted them. The mango thread is brilliant ...
