Dd and her partner have asked to be in our bubble which is fabulous. Both are vegetarian - obviously I can and do cook vegetarian food but not usually festive stuff. If they are here for two or three days I'd really like some great recommendations for canapes, festive main courses and generally yummy stuff. Thank you! Ideally wholemealish but yummy. I am very comfortable with regular stuff - curry/pasta etc - would love some indulgent dinner party type main courses. Thank you!

If you are doing a roast dinner then a nut roast is delicious , my mum makes such a nice one the meat eaters end up picking at it too , lovely with gravy or red currant jelly.

WhatHaveIFound · 25/11/2020 22:43

For me it has to be either Jamie Oliver's nut roast or BBC Good Food's Christmas pies. Both delicious!

I really like this Veggie crumble as a main because it goes well with all the usual sides and isn’t too heavy, which I find the problem with pastry based veggie mains.

I don't have any specific suggestions, but I think vegetable tarts can be very impressive looking and they need that little bit f extra effort that makes everyone feel like you've pulled out the stops. I often spot them when looking through magazines (never make them because tarts are way toooo much effort for me and as I don't have any vegetarians to cook for, don't feel I have to do "impressive" veggie food!) :)

If they eat cheese, individual or group baked cheese is great. Can be dressed up with herbs and wine and served with posh crackers or even home made ones.

Warm butternut salad came up recently as a great starter for Christmas. Annoyingly, I could have sworn I saved a recipe but can't find it. But I did do a version as a main course for me, DH and DS recently and we all loved it - roasted large butternut chunks with cumin and a little cinnamon (I think I'd add garlic cloves next time and possibly some chilli flakes). Once cooked, I added it to uncooked baby spinach, toasted pine nuts, mozzarella (I think the cheese could be taken or left or replaced with shavings of vegetarian parmesan) and I served it with a dressing of lemon/honey dressing. Looked and tasted great.

Delia’s Parsnip Roulade. Absolute heaven.

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/jun/09/meera-sodha-recipe-tomato-pistachio-saffron-tart-vegan This is delicious, looks amazing and really not that difficult or time-consuming to make. Leftovers are excellent cold. If there's no need for it to be vegan the puff pastry could be any kind. I think JusRol has an all-butter version and the vegan version is all vegetable fat, which unfortunately usually means there's palm oil in there, something I try to avoid (not easy, it seems to be in everything).

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/moroccan-spiced-pie This is also excellent. A lot to assemble, but you could do it in stages. The recipe includes instructions to make your own hummus to put into the pie. This is unnecessary. Use ready-made instead. I also didn't bother with the harissa yoghurt sauce when I made this.

I've been meaning to make that Delia Smith parsnip roulade ever since I bought her Christmas book, which must be something like 30 years ago. Maybe its time has come! I have parsnips in the fridge and a jar of cranberry sauce in the cupboard for some reason.

Lots of lovely ideas - thank you! I'm feeling hungry reading them even though I've eaten.

Definitely time to dust off my Delia Christmas book but I'll be trying out lots of the others too. Various ingredients have been added to tomorrow's Tesco order.

We are a veggie family and each year I try to do something different for Christmas. This year Im going with feta and spinach filo parcels, which will be served, with all the traditional roast veggies.

ForTheLoveOfCatFood · 28/11/2020 22:09

Super easy but yummy veggie stuffing recipe use paxo stuffing or similar
Blitzed mixed nuts, cut up chestnuts and some tamari then add to stuffing mix and add water. Either make into balls or cook in a loaf tin. Easy alternative to a nut roast Smile

ginsparkles · 28/11/2020 22:11

I'm making spinach and ricotta ravioli in the shape of Christmas crackers for my DD who just turned veggie. It's a Jamie Oliver recipe

Placemarking - came here to ask this very question.

I've found this recipe

Feminist10101 · 28/11/2020 23:55

I’ve never understood risotto as a potential alternative to roast meat. Everything about it is wrong: texture, carby, doesn’t go with gravy. Confused

Darker · 28/11/2020 23:59

That would be for another meal - not Christmas day.

Foxinsocks1 · 29/11/2020 16:23

I like a vegetable tart or mushroom wellington. I absolutely hate nut roast and get so mad that it’s on pretty much every festive menu every single year

AlwaysLatte · 29/11/2020 16:24

We're not vegetarian but we try to limit the amount of meat we eat. This is a delicious favourite that we have quite often.

We made a lovely mushroom Wellington last year. Delicious!

teaandtoast49 · 29/11/2020 16:34

veggie enchiladas are one of my favourite vegetarian foods and can be made spicy, packed with veg, etc. according to your tastes

BillBaileysPasoFace · 29/11/2020 16:40

Nigella spiced bulgur wheat with roast veggies, and ( on her tv show this week) with pink sauce ( yoghurt, beetroot, chilli, ginger and garlic blitzed together, swap yoghurt for vegans,) . Could make it more Christmassy by adjusting the spices.

We do the mushroom pate en croute and it is fab. It looks and tastes impressive and it works really well as leftovers.

MyCatShopsAtAldi · 29/11/2020 16:50

Mary Berry’s new book (Simple Comforts) has some lovely looking recipes. We’ve tried the roast veg and paneer curry, but the sweet potato and spinach pithivier looks great.

Darker · 01/12/2020 18:09

Has anyone got a favourite mushroom wellington recipe?

lastqueenofscotland · 01/12/2020 20:00

There’s a recepie in the Leon vegetarian book for a nut roast with cranberry jelly and Stilton and it is divine
