Where can I buy fresh yeast?

I want to make bread with fresh yeast but I can only find dried stuff. I've heard that the bakery section in supermarkets will give you some if you go and ask. IS this true? I don't want to make an arse of myself.
TIA

Do you have a local baker? I used to buy it from there rather than a supermarket.

We've got bakers oven and greggs. I think there is a new deli just opened, do you think they would give me some if they dont sell it, provided they use it on the premises that is?

Asda does it.

purpleflower · 19/10/2007 12:02

Ours was a tiny small town bakers so not sure about chains. Sorry.

Lazarou · 19/10/2007 12:03

Really? Do they sell it or do you ask for it at the bakery bit?

Can you used fresh yeast in a bread maker (don't know where I could get it from tho')

Lazarou · 19/10/2007 12:25

I make it by hand. Is a bread maker a worthwhile investment? Are the results better?

Local baker will sell you some

I like my breadmaker - I put all the stuff in and an hour later I have a loaf of bread (which is fab) - in the first 6 weeks after I got it I lost about 8 or 10 inches off my waist - so I guess that shows how much the additives in bread affect me

Tesco give you loads and don't charge for it either! (At least mine never do!)
Sainsbury's do it too but they charge yu, only about 20p though.

I might get a breadmaker in that case. Also need an ice cream maker, although worried it may end up gathering dust along with the juicer and the pasta machine. Damn Jamie Oliver!

Lazarou definitely get a breadmaker. My ice cream maker was in the charity bag within days..The pasta machine and juicer will be going shortly!

Sainsburys sells it for 99p for a huge block - I cut it into 1/2 oz cubes and freeze them.

Don't get a breadmaker, even the very best only make bread that is fairly good - OK, better than bought stuff - but hand-made is much much better. I've tried and eaten bread from a range of breadmakers, including top of the range (Which magazine best etc), and while some of it is definitely OK, it doesn't hold a candle to mine. And all my relatives/friend who have breadmakers agree!

I'd only get a breadmaker for emergency use -say if I had a stinking cold and wasn't feeling 'hygienic' enough to make bread or a similar situation!

Mind you, I do use my ice-cream maker lots - I can and have made it by hand, but my machine is great!

Lazarou · 19/10/2007 18:09

OK, thank you everyone.

Morrisons sell fresh yeast in the refrigerated section near the butter and marg for about 69p. I didn't know you could freeze it though!

OrmIrian · 19/10/2007 18:51

lazarou - yes. Chap in Asda gave some fresh yeast to DH when I sent him in search of dried stuff once and couldn't find it. Very kind of him I thought
