Quick, easy savoury baking recipes to do with a 19 month old...

DD's first bit of baking was a huge success. (Baby Danish pastries. She helped cut "squares" of ready roll pastry with a pizza cutter and then put blobs of pre-made custard and chia jam on them.)

I want to follow it up but I'm getting stuck looking for similarly quick and simple recipes.

I did try these cookies, which were great, but her involvement was limited to sucking the chocolate chips and putting them back in the bowl... (www.pickuplimes.com/single-post/2017/03/19/One-bowl-Peanut-Butter-Chocolate-Oatmeal-Cookies)

So I think I need something much simpler and quicker. And ideally savoury. Any suggestions?

Cheese tarts. Use commercial flaky pastry, line jam tart tins and mix up egg and grated cheese with maybe a few grinds of pepper or a lunch of cayenne (depending on your and your DC's tastes).

She can put the grated cheese into the egg and knock it around with a fork.

They taste fan by the way.

That was quick! And a great idea, thank you. Damn my current lack of ready roll pastry...

Cheese straws are also good.

Have you watched 'I Can Cook' no idea if it is still on Cbeebies but I'm sure you could find video clips on YouTube, very good simple recipes and good tips on how to adapt recipes so children can take part.

Cooking with Dd when she was under about 3 years was never that successful. I think you have to be prepared to do most of the cooking yourself, maybe giving them a mixing bowl with water in to play with alongside you, and just get them to make the odd contribution, dropping chocolate chips / cheese in the mixture, if you want an edible product at the end of it. They'll think they are taking part but you don't end up with a kitchen covered in flour.

On the other hand Dd Loved decorating, so those squeeze icing tubes were always in the cupboard and she would spend ages decorating rich tea biscuits, squeezing the container is also good for fine motor skills.

Not all baking, but some recipes which I did when mine were toddlers:
Cornflake nuggets realfood.tesco.com/recipes/cornflake-chicken-nuggets.html She can crush the cornflakes and help coat the chicken
Bean burgers www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/veggie_bean_burgers_for_53280
Baked bean muffins www.goodtoknow.co.uk/recipes/baked-bean-muffins

There are some fantastic ideas here, thank you guys!

@HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime, that's exactly why I want quick and simple. I figure I can do a lot of chopping and prepping on her nap, and then she can mix, pour, redistribute and generally make a mess helping me to get whatever it is ready for the oven!

Those cheese tarts that @GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman suggested are seriously good, especially if eaten warm.
Cheese scones are good, too. Or savoury muffins with cheese and sundried tomatoes.

Bloodybridget · 21/11/2020 18:46

Although I have always made the cheese tarts with shortcrust pastry. I expect flaky works well too.

English muffin "pizzas"
DD can mix a little bowl of tomato puree, oregano and passata (only a little passata otherwise it'll make the end result soggy). Then she can help dollop and spread it on halves of English muffin. Then chop/bash a few raw mushrooms. And then bash/pull apart a mozzarella. You can help her distribute the toppings and she can watch you pop them under a grill.

Delicious for a quick lunch.

Pizza.
Use ready or home made base (or small wrap), have a variety of veg, meat ,cheese, herb toppings available & let junior add what they want
