Red and white, up to £10 a bottle.

I apparantly have no tastebuds and am happy with Blossom Hill but am looking for Xmas presents for people who may have more discerning palates.

Thanks

I love Montana Sauvingon Blanc - it's a lovely white - slightly fruity but not sweet. Not sure how much but I suspect less than a tenner.

good question... will watch with interest

ggglimpopo · 18/10/2007 16:20

Well if you nipped over to Bordeaux I could point in the right direction, but have no idea what is on offer in the UK at the mo. Sorry.[grin}

Baffy · 18/10/2007 16:21

excellent offer ggg - when would you like us to visit?!

Budababe · 18/10/2007 16:22

The Montana is 6.61 in Tesco if you buy a case. So one would be a bit more maybe but not much.

I tend to go for NZ whites and Aussie reds.

Ok a Shiraz/Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon are good for winter drinking and a tenner will buy you a very drinkable one.
Alternatively Italian reds such as Amarone or a decent Montepulciano are delicious.

For white, NZ Sauvignon Blanc is yum or a French Viognier or I also love Italian Gavi de Gavi or Verdicchio for something a bit cheaper.

villa maria (nz) is lovely, ranges from around £6.99 - £9.99

also errazuriz (chile) prices range as above

Agree with NZ Sauvignon Blanc - Oyster Bay is a great one. McWilliams also do a nice Reisling.

Reds I'm really into Rioja such as Faustino, Campo Viejo, Torres and Maques de Carcerre.

Wolf Blass Cabernet is lovely though, or go for a decent priced Pinot Noir.

harleyweendemon · 19/10/2007 10:42

mcguigans is nice too

Sunshinecursedmummy · 19/10/2007 10:44

You could always go for a Barolo as well, as they don't tend to come at less than a tenner a bottle.

satyricon · 01/11/2007 10:20

Barolo is a marvellous wine but, as Sun says, it's rare to find it for less than around £15 a bottle. Ridiculous really as in Piedmont it's nothing like that price. Amarone is usually even more expensive. Barbera or Barbaresco are really good alternatives to Barolo. They come from the same region, they're cheaper and althuogh they're not quite as heavy and rich, lots of people find Barolo a bit much for them. Most offies will do a Barbera d'Asti for 7 or 8 quid.

challenge someone's perception of sherry... I like a very dry one (Lustau Papirosa), and the Sainers Taste The Difference oloroso is good if you don't mind the bottle.
