How much milk does a 2.5year old need?

I think I'm giving too much (7-8 oz whole milk before bed). She seems to love it but then, she also loves chocolate and Fruit Shoots!

LiliAnjelika · 17/10/2007 19:03

Oh good. Didn't think you could od on calcium. Just that a friend told me yesterday she'd quit giving milk before bed and just gave the occasional glass when requested during day.

GColdtimer · 17/10/2007 19:05

why "yuck" moondog?

moondog · 17/10/2007 19:06

Cows' milk

bubblagirl · 17/10/2007 19:07

i have a sleep therapist who sees no problem having milk in bed as its a relaxant maybe when potty training its not a good idea to have dtrink right on top of bed but then depends on child but my sleep therapist sees no problem and i know some older kids who love warm milk before bed different people parent in different ways do what works best for you and dd

dont listen to what others did as you know your dd best my ds loves his bedtime milk helps him relax when having story

LiliAnjelika · 17/10/2007 19:08

Moondog - did you give soya milk instead?

If my DS is anything to go by - all of it. All the milk. I would save money if I bought a cow.

LiliAnjelika · 17/10/2007 19:10

Exactly bubblagirl. Milk does really help her wind down. She'd fully potty trained during day but not yet at night, so I suppose I might cut down to 5 oz at night and give her a top up in the morning or something when I'm ready to brave it. Not yet though as I have a newborn and I can't cope with anything at the moment!

just do what you fel is best i dont intend stopping my ds milk any time soon maybe when 3 or older i'll give it before bed but for nowit works wonders and it will do no harm so why stop

GColdtimer · 17/10/2007 19:35

My niece who is nearly 4 still has a big glass of warm milk before she goes to bed. I don't see any harm in it at all. DD is 18 months and still has an 8oz bottle. She has only just started cutting back on it during the day - I would just go with her - especially as you have a newborn too!

donnie · 17/10/2007 19:38

my dds both only have milk in their breakfast cereal - they don't like to drink it neat. They are 6 and 2.5 but they have lots of calcium via cheese, yogurt, houmous etc so I don't worry too much.

LazyLinePUMPKINJane · 17/10/2007 19:48

DS is 2.2 and has a cup of (goats) milk in the morning and before bed. I have thought about cutting it down, he doesn't seem that bothered about the morning one but does look forward to the evening milk.

I would say that if you want to reduce the milk then do so, but it doesn't matter yet.

Seona1973 · 17/10/2007 20:13

they only need the equivalent of 350mls (approx 12oz) which includes all other sources of calcium. If your lo enjoys it then you dont have to stop it if you dont want to. If you still give it from a bottle it might be worth trying it from a cup and that would maybe cut the amount down a bit. My dd had stopped having milk at bedtime by then but she was never a great lover of it anyway. My 1 year old ds has a cup of milk in the morning and at bedtime and still seems to enjoy it so I am leaving him be for the moment.

Sazisi · 17/10/2007 20:25

Mine has about 6 oz before brushing her teeth, and usually 4 oz with lunch. Sometimes she wants more, in which case I surreptitiously water it down

CristinaTheAstonishing · 17/10/2007 20:29

My 2.7 year old DD has about 200 ml at lunchtime and another 200 ml or so later on, plus a little bit in cornflakes.

moondog · 17/10/2007 22:18

No Lil.
They only have it on cereal (rarely) in yoghurt (rarely) and cheese.
Overrated stuff,cows' milk.
