And where do I buy all the bits of muslin and stuff you seem to need?

bump because I want an easy beginner recipe too

arfishy · 21/10/2007 03:53

Hmm. Don't know about beginner but surely Delia is the way to go?

Lakeland will do muslins and stuff.

There's a good thread from last year for Christmas Cake too.

Thanks arfishy. Seems I need a steamer do I?

OP posts:
franch · 23/10/2007 11:42

Oh and muslin or 'pudding cloth' and pudding basin ...

OP posts:
arfishy · 23/10/2007 11:43

I think you can just put the pudding basin into a huge vat of water and cook it that way.

Try this one:

arfishy · 23/10/2007 11:44

Yes, think you'll definitely need the muslin and pudding basin but can get away without the pressure cooker or steamer.

franch · 23/10/2007 16:44

OK - thanks arfishy.

Wonder if I'm being overambitious ...

What do you reckon bananapud?

OP posts:
arfishy · 24/10/2007 08:35

You'll be fine!! Mix it all up, put in muslin, in basin and steam over water. Lovely!

Do a test run. Go on! The second recipe I posted was much easier than Delia.

rosmonster · 24/10/2007 09:06

franch, I have a recipe for a chocolate xmas pud which you can microwave if you're interested?

Sounds a bit odd I know, but it was a big hit when I did a family xmas dinner!

Screaminglips · 24/10/2007 09:09

hmm....dp had been reminding me this all week to make it. i find most of the ingredients are at Sainsburys. i can never find some of it in Asda...never!

i use my Xmas book and its fab!!!

franch · 27/10/2007 07:51

Which Xmas book Screaming?

I'd be interested to see the choc recipe rosmonster - I'd love it but not sure about some of the family ....

banana - there's a lovely easy recipe in the current Good Housekeeping

OP posts:
franch · 28/10/2007 11:42

I've just scanned it so can email it to anyone who contacts me (too long to type out)

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 28/10/2007 11:43

Muslin?? WTF do you need muslin for? Pudding basin, foil, string.

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 28/10/2007 11:44

The "nonconformist" one Nigella has in Feast is fab. TBH, none of the recipes for Christmas pud are rocket science

franch · 28/10/2007 11:55

all the recipes i've seen say wrap it in muslin

You couldn't post the Nigella one could you dragon ....

OP posts:
franch · 28/10/2007 11:57

ooh ooh don't worry dragon found it online

OP posts:
franch · 28/10/2007 11:59

Doesn't say in the Telegraph article how far ahead you can make it - I want to get it out of the way - does Nigella say in the book??

OP posts:
ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 28/10/2007 12:00

She says the end of November "stir up Thursday" or something.

The full recipe serves twelve adults. I halve it!

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 28/10/2007 12:05

That one on the Telegraph is smaller quantities than the one in the book. A 1/4 I think but not all the quantities seem to match.

Anyway,it's "stir up Sunday"which falls on the Sunday after Trinity. Apparently. This is traditional rather than how far ahead you canmake it though, she doesn't say how well it keeps.

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 28/10/2007 12:09

Apparently (according to MN!) I made it on 3rd Nov in 2005 though and didn't kill anyone

franch · 28/10/2007 12:11

Think I'll try the GH one this year - it's a super-simple one-bowl affair. Will hang on to the Nigella one though - will prob even invest in a copy of Feast as it'll be me doing the whole lot next year
