I absolutely adore it mashed with butter and black pepper, any tips on the chopping part though?

I always seem to get sore hands and it's like a wrestling match.

I think Asda or Morrison’s sell it diced and frozen - perfect!

I've seen a tip where you microwave the thing whole! I've not tried it though.

I saw a thing online about how you can microwave the whole thing for 20 minutes and then scoop out the inside. Disclaimer, I haven’t tried it myself yet though I intend to.

I saw a tip the other day on SM where you microwave it and then you open it up to perfect soft swede.

Justmuddlingalong · 29/10/2020 14:41

Our greengrocers chop it into manageable chunks at the counter. Or as I do, leave it in the veg drawer until it softens a bit.

In general I find super sharp knives make a big difference- a sharpened Global knife goes through it like butter.

Ok so we've all seen the Swede in the microwave - has anyone actually tried it? Or is it like that pineapple thing that only works with one type of pineapple?

Alfiemoon1 · 29/10/2020 14:44

Yes I always do my swede in the microwave so much easier than chopping it up

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 29/10/2020 14:45

I microwave it as it is then scoop out the flesh. It takes ages but it is easy and quick to do. I only do it when we have a roast dinner which is not often for the two of us but I am thinking that next time I do it I will cook in the microwave then stick it in the oven for 10 minutes or so for the skin to crisp and make it easier to scoop.

For Christmas dinner I usually do it the day before, scoop it out, mash with butter and pop in the oven to reheat at the last minute.

The Swede in the microwave works really well. It's how I always cook it for easy mash.

Whatwouldscullydo · 29/10/2020 14:46

Microwave it fir about 10 mins ( or longer depending on the size and how "done" it is) then just scoop put the flesh amd mix with butter or whatever

Sainsbury’s sell a bag of diced carrot and swede

JaJaDingDong · 29/10/2020 19:39

Get a sharper knife!

Chewbecca · 29/10/2020 19:42

I use that very same pampered chef cutter for chopping swede!

Ninkanink · 29/10/2020 19:43

Get a Japanese knife. Slices through it like butter.

Otherwise, cook it whole, unpeeled, in the microwave.

Chameleon2003 · 29/10/2020 19:44

Farm foods frozen ready chopped.

TroysMammy · 29/10/2020 19:44

I tried the microwave method for the first time on Tuesday. 10 mins on high, turn it over and another 10 mins. It was delicious. I used to find boiled swede would still retain water even when it had been drained. I'm telling everyone who likes swede of this game changer.

I've also tried it grated (in a food processor) and steamed after having it at a Toby Carvery years ago. That was ok but you still had to peel and cut it into chunks.
