Flour used in Bread Machine

My home made bread seems to have lost all taste recently, no idea why. I thought that the flour may have gone "stale" somehow. Is this likely? Any other ideas out there? Thanks!

It has been a tough year for growing wheat, don't know if this would have affected the flavour?

Katymac · 14/10/2007 18:25

Could you have subconsiously reduced the salt & sugar in it?

KindMum · 15/10/2007 18:30

The same flour that once made lovely bread is making somwthing pretty tasteless. Don´t think the prob is with teh salt and sugar as I´ve made quite a few poor loaves lately..

Thanks for your ideas ladies!

WHat a shame how 'old' is it

My bread flour I tend to use in less than a month/6 weeks or so

KindMum · 16/10/2007 20:37

Could be 2 months old or more I suppose.. Problem is I like to make lots of different loaves so have 10 types of flour in the cupboard at a time... Is the flour too old then? But normal flour lasts forever..

we buy loads of stoneground wholemeal at a time cos entails trip to sainsburys instead of asda... never noticed a problem.

Presumably you've not changed whatever oil/fat you put in?

Just a thought...has anyone else complained or is it maybe your perception of the taste thats altered?

I'm like you. I tend to buy lots of different types of flour and I have noticed that they can go 'off' a bit. Same goes for the yeast. I just made a gorgeous loaf today, yummy, must go and eat some...

KindMum · 17/10/2007 19:09

Hm, ok, will buy new bag of flour and see if that makes any difference. If it doesn´t I´ll use new flour with new yeast. That must work if nothing else! Thanks!
