Slow Cooker - to warm soup

Basically I'm looking to use my slow cooker to warm tinned soup so that's its ready to put in a flask in the morning.

Our slow cooker is on a timer so it would be easy to set it to come on before we get up so by the time we are ready its hot and ready.

My question is how long would you heat/warm it up for?

It seems a complicated way to do it?

It only takes a few minutes to heat soup on the hob or in the microwave. Why not just do that?

I really wouldn't bother with tinned soup , but putting the ingredients in the night before and making your own now , that's a better idea 😀

We don't have a microwave and DP gets up, rolls into his work clothes and out the door because he leaves super early. I've no chance of getting him up early enough, and awake enough, to use the stove.

I'm trying to do it so he just needs to fill the flask as he's on the way out the door.

He works outdoors in all weather, and his work have removed the canteen/mircowave etc so I'm trying to think of ways to get hot food to him over the winter.

I'll later be making mince and tatties etc overnight in it.

Probably will do that in the future, but wanting to use up the tins of soup in the cupboard (that only DP likes!)

I love veggie soup slow cooked.

Why is it your responsibility? Why is it down to you to get him up early enough to use the stove?

He’s an adult and can sort his own food. If he wants hot he can get up and sort it, otherwise he can buy it or make himself sarnies the night before.

I get up early to go to work. No canteen at work. I wouldn’t expect Dh to be worrying about heating soup so I don’t have to get up.

Better option IMO is a pot noodle or one of the healthier versions- i like itsu. Boiling water can usually be found somewhere and it’s more substantial than soup.

Wolfiefan · 21/10/2020 21:19

No. You can’t use a slow cooker to reheat.

CodenameVillanelle · 21/10/2020 21:21

I really don't think this would work. Plus putting an appliance on for several hours because he can't spend 5 minutes heating soup in the morning is nuts

MrsPernicious · 21/10/2020 21:23

Probably about 3 hours in the slow cooker or three mins on the stove.

I knew there would be a comment in this manner.

I like to make sure he has warm food at work, especially in the winter. He usually takes the dinner left overs (that I make since I'm at home) but obviously he can't just now. He has no access to any heating facilities, or boiling water as he works outdoors and doesn't leave his work site. He works 12 hour shifts so I will make a bit of effort to make the day easier for him.

I always warm soup on the hob. Different if you're cooking from scratch but don't give yourself extra work!

OnNaturesCourse · 21/10/2020 21:26

I've set it for 1 hour on high.

I've reheated home made soup for this time in the slow cooker before so I'm jsut guessing it'll work for the tinned soup as well. I guess time will tell.

Or use real soup ingredients so it's ready in the morning. Look up slow cooker soup recipes on the internet? It's just so not worth it for tinned soup!

OnNaturesCourse · 21/10/2020 21:30

Yeah, I'll definitely be making the soup from scratch again now the slow cooker is out but we won't have the ingredients for this until the weekend when the shopping gets done so I'm just using up what we have at moment which is tinned.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
