Spanish dessert to end tapas meal

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 13/10/2020 19:27

We should have been in Spain next week so am doing tapas on Friday, just for the household as other guests not allowed so it doesn't need to be overly fancy.
I'm ok for savoury tapas ideas (tho feel free to share your absolute favourites if you have any outstanding ones). We don't usually have desserts so I thought I'd do one to make the evening more special. But when I google Spanish desserts, they seem to be churros or flan/crem Catalan which seem a bit rich/heavy for after a quite rich meal. I can't think past caramel oranges. Any other ideas welcome thank you.

Came here to say churros is the only correct answer to this question Wink

The only traditional Spanish desserts I can think of are quite heavy. I think a bit like British desserts! Could you do some lovely fruit salad instead? Or you could have a small portion of a rich dessert. Orrrrr, could could be very original and create some kind of light deconstructed/reinvented dessert Confused

Slice of Orange & Almond cake. Or just a Spanish orange if you can't be bothered to make the cake Grin

Ninkanink · 13/10/2020 19:42

They served a wonderful light custard for pudding at our favourite Spanish restaurant - not too sweet, served with some berries. Along with a glass of Licor 43 it made the perfect end to a rich meal.

Flan or Creme Caramel. I’m learning Spanish at the moment and this is the desert often given as an example.

tshirtsuntan · 13/10/2020 19:45

I like those frozen oranges stuffed with orange sorbet. You can sometimes buy them in lidl but probably not too much faff to hollow oranges out, freeze the innards and stuff back in/ re freeze? (Disclaimer- I've never done it Grin)

AdaColeman · 13/10/2020 19:59

Make a frangipane tart or cake and serve small slices with poached or bottled peaches alongside.

Almond Magnums would be an easy answer! Wink

Though I have to say I love caramelised oranges.

Vienetta

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 13/10/2020 20:09

Thank you all. Am just wondering if you can get those children's ice creams which come in plastic animal containers in Spain - never seen them here but I've never looked.
Would be funny and no effort!

Dessert wine?

OldGreyBoots · 13/10/2020 20:16

@RockingMyFiftiesNot you can get these but have to buy in bulk Grin

Punky ice creams Grin
not sure where you can get them, think our local Chinese does them but that would be expensive.

I think Churros would be good, maybe on sharing plates so no pressure to eat too much?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 13/10/2020 20:19

@OldGreyBoots wow well done! Not sure I want £20 worth for 4 of us and don't have many children around to give the rest away to.

Churros!
Has to be.

loutypips · 13/10/2020 20:26

Natillas. Bowl of custard with a Maria biscuit on top.

orangenasturtium · 13/10/2020 20:29

Punky the Penguin and friends are sold in the UK.

This is my favourite Spanish dessert but it is about as rich as you can get! What's not to love about a pudding called bacon from heaven.

How about some fresh figs with turron, if you want something light and fresh?

SexyGiraffe · 13/10/2020 20:30

Tarta de abuela (grandmother's cake). It's a light chocolate desert with biscuit that's very spanish. I live in Spain - it's always on the menu. I know you said creme Catalan seems heavy, but it's very common and can be quite small portions.

Noflora · 13/10/2020 20:33

I haven't been to Spain for a while but on a long driving holiday the pudding menu wherever we were seemed to be Flan, ice cream, fruit or walnuts with cream and honey.

QuentinInQuarantino · 13/10/2020 20:36

Spain isn't such a pudding place but there are some good ones. Churros is gorgeous but more of a snack? Dipped in hot chocolate - wonderful!

Flan/crema Catalana
A proper Northern Spanish baked cheese cake is just incredible - recipe
Torrija (like French toast) with ice cream
Those melting middle chocolate gu desserts are basically our Fondant de Chocolate
Tarta de whisky is on every menu but I don't know how it's made. It's like a sort of
Whiskey triifle

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 13/10/2020 20:37

The school meals dessert Spanish equivalent would be fresh fruit or yoghurt Grin I take it you are not after that, so...

Creme brulee / crema catalana / natillas with a biscuit on top as per above

Flan

Torta de Santiago: 3 eggs, 150 gr sugar, 150 gr ground almonds, rind of 1 lemon, teaspoon of cinnamon. Mix. Bake for 30 mins at 180c. Easiest dessert ever. Decorate with icing sugar and a St James cross outline of you wish.

Turron/ nougat if you can get hold of it

HTH

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 13/10/2020 20:38

Oh forgot to add

Nuts with cottage cheese and honey drizzled over the lot

Off to have a snack now...

Hoctober · 13/10/2020 20:40

I'm gutted, I just found a product I've been searching for for years on that Holdsworth link and got all excited before realising they only deliver to trade

Anyway sorry, my vote is for churros

Pipandmum · 13/10/2020 20:44

Flan can be very light. I love it. Churros is a breakfast food as far as I'm concerned.

Ninkanink · 13/10/2020 20:52

I’m hungry.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 13/10/2020 20:58

Thank you all. Spoilt for choice now! Tho can't get Punky out of my head!
