April Babies - Anyone else having trouble weaning??

Have been trying to wean DD for 3 weeks now and she's still pushing the food out. Why can't she get it?? I started off with spoonfuls of rice for 'practice' at the 11am feed and have also tried a couple of sweet and savoury purees (just in case she doesn't like the rice) but I don't seem to be getting anywhere - she's still having to have a full bottle of milk after the 'feeding sessions' so she's obviously not taking much in - most of it seems to end up on her bib. Am I expecting too much for her to have 'got it' by now - I'm trying her twice a day every day now!

I've changed her milk to one with extra Iron as I'm worried now about her Iron stores being low and not eating food that contains the extra Iron she needs.

How old is your dd?

Don't panic, it can take a while for them to realise what food is all about. At this stage, milk is still the main part of there diet, and really one or two teaspoons of food is all they'll need to get used to flavours, and textures etc. Especially if she is only 4 or 5 mths old. I wouldn't worry about increasing meals or the quantity in them until she begins to show a bit more interested.

don't worry at this early stage about her iron levels or anything else - as long as she keeps up with her milk she's fine as far as nutrition goes at her young age.
I can't think of much about the swallowing though except to give it a break for a few days and try again then when you feel a bit mor relaxed about it?
does she have a cold or is teething right now as my babies refused to eat then anyhow.
you could try feeding her during your meal times (not very easy I know) so she can watch you eating too? and I can recommend 'tier' feeding - first milk, then solids; then milk
hth

Might sound silly but is your baby comfortable when you are feeding? I sometimes strugle feeding my twins because I clamp their hands down to avoid mess but this means they are peed off at being restrained before the food is even near their mouths! so I start off with arms flailing while they get used to the food and then gradually restrain them when they are in the swing of things.

Also could your baby have a blocked up nose? My dd loves her solids but every so often wont take it and then i realise there is a mega-bogey requiring removal!

How old is she? Remember in the 20s and 30s weaning started at 8months plus. Don't worry and certainly don't panic. She will eat eventually, but sounds as if she isn't really ready yet.

You need hewlettsdaughter, she is in the same boat. Come and find her on out thread.

Found it MrsD
How old is your dd JPM? Mine is 6 months - I have been weaning for 2 weeks and she hasn't really sussed what to do with the food yet. I am hoping she will soon, as I am also trying to get her to take bottles/cups of milk before she goes to the childminder in Nov (I have been exclusively breastfeeding up until now).
Personally, I wouldn't worry if your dd is still having a full bottle of milk after trying the food. The food isn't meant to replace the milk when you first start giving it. I agree with the others - try some milk first, then some food, then see if she wants milk again after that.
The most important thing is not to get stressed about food - you don't want to transmit this to your baby. HTH.

That last bit re stressing about food is what I'm telling myself
Let me know if you discover any tricks on getting your dd to swallow!
