How to cook mackerel without stinking the entire house out

Anyone?
I've tried :

Oven baking, pongs.
Pan frying by wrapping the fish in foil then putting into a hot fry pan. Doesn't work.

I know it's a particularly smelly fish but it was the cheapest I could afford this week.

Thank you

BBQ

AriettyHomily · 21/09/2020 12:17

There isn't one. It stinks and it lingers.

BBQ outside?

Hoppinggreen · 21/09/2020 12:17

You can’t

BlooperReel · 21/09/2020 12:29

You cant really avoid it, stick the extractor fan on, open the windows and close the doors to other rooms whilst also having those windows open.

A decent wax melt on the burner afterwards might hep get rid of the lingering after smell faster.

Bbq.

i wrap mine in wet newspaper and do in the oven...proper parcel it up. When you unwrap it the skin comes away nicely- plus the smell is very much reduced

Yes a friend suggested bbq but I've never done one before.
Gatekeeper would the same thing work with greaseproof paper? I might try that today...
Thank you all

Ss it happens, mackerel is very oily and strongly flavoured so of all the fish to try out the bbq, this is a good one.

Roll in oatmeal and cook gently for a few minutes on each side. That’s the simplest start. Serve with lemon.

Stuff with tomato, onion and dill.

I don't think it would work the same way as you can't wet greaseproof...newspaper needs to be wet. Was given this tip by a little old lady over twenty years ago whilst working in Appen and Ive cooked them like this ever since

chromis · 21/09/2020 16:08

I do english mustard and lemon (and salt and pepper)

Have you got whole fish or fillets?

stirling · 21/09/2020 21:40

I did it!!! So excited Smile
I improvised a bit on the tip above and not even the slightest whiff!

So they were fillets. I put two on a sheet of baking paper, and plastered over some Thai mixture (finely chopped ginger, lemongrass, lime leaves, coriander, chilli bit of lime juice) and wrapped up tightly. Then tucked parcel into a brown paper bag and added a base layer of foil. Into the steamer with lid on very tight and gas low for 15 mins.

Super tasty and what a bargain and best of all no lingering scents. So thank you gatekeeper for the idea. Will try with newspaper too when I have some.
Sandgroper sounds really tasty.

Smashing stuff stirling! The little old lady that told me this was called Mrs McGilliecuddy and she had it from her mother and her mither before her.
