Tell me how you store an avocado - when ripening and once opened

I always end up scoffing note than I intend to as I’ve no idea how to store them 😬

Do you ripen then outside or inside the fridge. Once open I know people say you should keep the stone with the flesh but when I’ve done that it’s still gone brown. Am I meant to take the flesh out and maybe put it in Tupperware alongside the stone. Maybe wrap it up in something? In the fridge I assume? I’ve honestly no idea! They stress me out 🤦🏻‍♀️

Leave the stone in, squeeze lemon juice over the cut surface, put in a dish, cover with clingfilm & put in fridge

It will discolour if left longer than a day, but not that badly. The brown can easily be scraped off for aesthetic reasons, but it's safe to eat.

When ripening - in the fruit bowl. Definitely not the fridge

Once ripe - eat, or put in fridge to halt further ripening

Once open - leave the uneaten bit in its skin, clingfilm, fridge and then eat as soon as possible. It WILL go brown whatever you do, but only on the top surface exposed to the air, so if you scrape that off the rest should be ok. But I wouldn’t leave it uneaten longer than a day anyway.

Wrap in foil and in the fridge

Best thing we've tried us to leave a cut avocado in a little Tupperware with half an onion. Don't know the science behind it, but it works.

minipie · 12/09/2020 17:49

But then surely it absorbs the onion smell and taste?

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 12/09/2020 17:52

Not that I've noticed

justanotherneighinparadise · 12/09/2020 19:15

Interesting! I shall try it and report back!

I put lime juice on mine then turn them upside down on a plate without the stone. The key is not allowing air to get to them

Avocado is best eaten as soon as possible. Grin

Would not wrap in foil, transfers flavour. We don't even have foil (or clingfilm) in the house. Not convinced on the onion, but I like onion flavour at least. Rest I can go with. Doused in orange juice works if no lemon available.

If you cut one open and it turns out to be not as ripe as you hoped, slice and fry in butter. It's delicious!

Yellowbutterfly1 · 12/09/2020 22:47

No issue at all with the transferring of flavour when wrapped in foil.

You could try an avocado pod. Not sure if it would work but we use the ones for onion and lemon -

In the fruit bowl, then my stomach.

AgeLikeWine · 12/09/2020 22:53

I ripen avocados in the fruit bowl next to the bananas. The gases emitted by the ripening bananas helps to ripen the avocados, apparently.

When they are ripe, they get eaten.
