Good, but basic, Indian recipe book

I'm old enough to have learned to cook using Delia's How to Cook. Now that my children have grown into teens, I'm looking at increasing the family repertoire, but have no idea where to start with Indian cookery. I need something that is relatively basic, doesn't involve too many ingredients which can't be obtained from a supermarket, but isn't just relying on a jar of curry sauce. Can anyone suggest a useful Indian food starter recipe book?

I like Made in India, lots of good recipes that I use regularly and generally uses ingredients that I can get in a supermarket rather than making a special trip to the Indian grocers.

I second Made in India. The recipes are simple, delicious and have always worked for me, and as karmakameleon says the ingredients are easy to obtain. I also love her second book Fresh India, which is entirely vegetarian.

I came in to suggest Made In India!

Thanks, I'll have a look at the suggestions. Sounds like it should be made in India!

Made in India is simply brilliant and was the book I used when first exploring Indian flavours. There are many recipes from the book that are firm firm family favourites.

I'd second the Hairy Bikers Great Curries. I have a dozen Indian recipe books but I must have made things from the Bikers more times that the others. More than just Indian curries in there too the Filipino Spicy Curry is a personal favourite.

I copied a load of recipes (& still use them) from my Mum's Madhur Jaffrey(sp) book from the 80's/80's
