Whats your favourite cook book?

I am thinking of buying something by Jamie Oliver as I favour "chuck in a bit of this" recipes

What is good?

I am a basic cook.
I like simple ingredients.
I want to stretch myself a little.
Priority is nutritious. (Nigella TV stuff is all FAT stuff!!!)

Have you tried Nigel Slater?

Mercy · 04/10/2007 20:45

Agree re Nigel Slater, especially 'Real Fast Food'

Many well-known cooks aren't into the health aspect of food imo but Nigel seems ok. And his recipes are easy.

AnnabelCaramel · 04/10/2007 20:51

Real Fast Food is one of my favourite books ever - very readable too.

frumpygrumpy · 04/10/2007 22:26

Thanks girls, I'm ashamed to say I've never heard of our Nigel I will peek on Amazon......

I like Tamasin Day-Lewis' Kitchen Bible - it has a huge range of stuff in it and is designed to be used by very beginners right through to those who want to make their own preserves and Christmas puddings etc - you can teach yourself to cook using it. It also covers a big range of types of foods - there are Italian things, curries, lots of trad English stuff etc etc in there

Carmenere · 05/10/2007 15:31

There is a lot to be said for Delia you know......

HairyIrene · 05/10/2007 15:43

Carmenere · 05/10/2007 15:47

Yes they do and her vegetarian book is really lovely with lots of variation and healthy stuff.

TheMuppetMuggle · 05/10/2007 15:48

Don't really have one yet
Am waiting (Impatiently) for the MN cookbook

bluefox · 05/10/2007 16:06

1000 vegetarian recipes from around the world (paragon books) and also the Be-ro book.

goingfriggincrazy · 05/10/2007 21:24

Agree with Nigel also...a fav in our house is the River Cottage family cookbook.

BBBee · 05/10/2007 21:26

second river cottage family cookbook - go to bookshoip and browse - something like 'good housekeeping' might be waht you are after - big range of recipes that al work.

oooggs · 05/10/2007 21:26

frumpy - you have time to cook?????

phdlife · 05/10/2007 21:28

The Essential Vegetarian

Jojay · 05/10/2007 21:28

Another Delia fan here - her 'How to Cook' covers virtually everything you can think of.

It's great for when you have a random ingredient and you don't know what to do with it - she has a recipe for EVERYTHING!!!

Also love the fact that it has basic stuff like how to cook roast potatoes, for numbskulls like me.....

shrooms · 05/10/2007 21:28

Vegan with a vengeance by Isa Chandra moscowitz (sp?!)

HairyIrene · 06/10/2007 18:04

frumpystumpy · 08/10/2007 09:49

ooogs, I don't cook, don't be silly! I jut like lining up the books in the kitchen and then my friends get impressed. I alternate Heinz spaghetti hoops with coco pops normally [innocent]

witchandchips · 08/10/2007 09:50

Moro cookbook is great
as is in the nigel one that is based on a diary. Gives you an idea what is good and seasonal at the same time

massivebigpumpkinface · 08/10/2007 09:50
