Chicken from butcher

I've just bought a medium sized chicken from the butcher and was fairly aghast to find that it cost me £16. I just gulped and paid up, but can anyone else tell me if that's normal of overpriced?
Thanks (I normally go to supermarket but wanted to support local business)

It's £16 from my butchers. If you get an organic cornfed one from sainsburys or m&s around me it's usually around £10/12 and a lot smaller than the big ones they do but I hope the chicken had a better life

Someone on here bought a 'fresh' turkey from her butcher, for around £60.00, it said eat within 4 days, so like use by 26th December or something as it was so fresh, just from the farm straight to the shop.

Then she found a label on it from when it was first killed frozen, it said eat by 27th August.

*I have guessed the dates, but you get the gist!

Re the RSPCA/Red Tractor chicken... unless it says Free Range, it's not FR. Red Tractor standards are really pretty low. The Tractor shows compliance with a minimum standard, but it's still not a nice life for a chicken.

Chicken is a treat for me, because I'm fussy and will only buy free range. And that makes it expensive.

Sounds very expensive! Whole large chickens from our butchers are £7 or 2 for £11
