How many bananas should a 9 month old have in a day???

My DD has suddenly decided that she adores bananas. She would happily munch through 2 a day - do you think this is too many?

well an adult shouldn't have more than 1 a day so 1 small one for a baby maximum IMO

daisyandbabybootoo · 02/10/2007 20:34

they have a tendency to bung them up iirc.

EmsMum · 02/10/2007 20:35

From what I can remember, you'll be able to tell from the output if the input is too great!

big or little bananas?

TheMadScaryHouse · 02/10/2007 20:35

I always find that bananas can cause constipation in my two, so beware

MegaLegs · 02/10/2007 20:36

Agree with daisy - DS4 used to suffer terrible constipation and a banana would cause him probs for days so take it easy. Make sure she drinks plenty.

belgo · 02/10/2007 20:36

bananas contain a lot of potassium - which is good - but I think two a day is probably too much for a 9 month old - I would restrict her to one a day.

She'll get sick of them very quickly if she eats that much banana.

belgo · 02/10/2007 20:36

I mean too much potassium is bad.

snowleopard · 02/10/2007 20:36

My DS is mad for them (he's 2) and I limit it to 1 a day, as it can make him constipated. I also don't buy them every time I go shopping, so I can say there aren't any - and I've found you can get mini ones so he can "have a banana" but he is actually getting less banana...

gosh lots of lovely replies so quickly - thank you! How rare do you think it is for everyone to agree on MN - I shall go by the consensus - it makes sense!! Thank you everyone x

Twigaletto, why shouldn't an adult have more than one banana a day? I'm really mystified over that.

Especially coming from a household where the children eat 2-4 bananas a day (as well as other fruit and veg), I eat at least 3 and my husband has anywhere from 4-7! Again, in addition to other fruit and veg and lots of wholefoods.

Someone else recently said to me that 'too many bananas' can give too much potassium in the diet, and since then I've done loads of research on this but can't find any 'real' evidence.

We've never found constipation to be a problem in this house...

I've asked health professionals about this and they are puzzled too. No-one seems to think you 'can' eat too many bananas, assuming the rest of your diet is varied and healthy. So where does this theory come from?

belgo · 03/10/2007 10:53

portonovo, do you not get sick of them?

portonovo · 03/10/2007 11:00

No, definitely not. We eat such a lot of fruit and veg that there's a real variety in there. So for example, yesterday I think I had 3 bananas. But I also had a kiwi, one apple, a few strawberries, a clementine, a handful of dried apricots and several portions of veg.

I agree if bananas were the only fruit/veg you ate it would probably get very boring and not be that good for you!

BroccoliSpears · 03/10/2007 11:03

I must admit that dd (17 mths) often eats more than one banana a day. I usually try to stop her at 2, but not always. She goes through phases and sometimes only a banana will do.

She's never had constipation probs.

I do worry vaguely though.

belgo · 03/10/2007 11:05

brocolliespears - don't worry about it - my kids go through phases as well - currently a kiwi fruit phase. I have to limit the number of them they eat as it gives them awful poo (with black seeds in)
