Food processor or mandolin

Have reasonable chopping skills but am pondering buying a processor or mandolin to help with larger amounts eg coleslaw, remoulade. Anyone have recommendations? Mandolin less bulky to store big potentially more risk to fingers and less versatile. Any advice gratefully received

Food processor without a doubt. Takes seconds. I use mine every day.

Which one do you have? I’ve seen one online with a 3.7l bowl but that seems like it would be huge

Oh disappointing. .I thought you wanted to cook od learn an instrument.

I have a food processor but I never use it...too lazy to put it all together and hate washing it.

We've got the Kenwood compact food processor. Really good gadget, does the job well and doesn't take up a lot of room. Not bank breaking either.

@iklboo how big is the feed tube can you get a good big chunk of cabbage in there

I'd probably quarter it first but it's a decent size, yes. It's got an emulsifying blade too for making mayo etc.

I have this one (think you can get it cheaper ) it was recommended by good housekeeping

Magimix. So easy to use and clean.

everythingstaken123 · 09/08/2020 22:17

Food processor. Mandolins are lethal. Andrew James have gone out of business so you can't buy the one posted above. Buy the best you can for the money you have. A mini one if you have no storage space. If you can't be bothered to wash it or whatever though, just use a grater!

gassylady · 10/08/2020 08:18

Thanks for all the comments have decided on a processor and am deciding between magimix and a cuisinart As that also gets a good review from good housekeeping Smile

I have a food processor but so rarely use as a nightmare to clean, I use a knife and box grater combination for coleslaw etc. I do have good knives though

I have a Benriner mandolin and a Moulinex julienne mouli. I use them both a lot - much easier to clean and less faff than getting the food processor out. Touch wood, I’ve never injured myself on the mandolin, but I do treat it with respect!

HaggisTheGreat · 10/08/2020 20:16

I use a mandolin for coleslaw - it’s pretty quick, compact and just goes in the dishwasher. But I don’t make industrial quantities. It’s also great for gratins and crisps.

gassylady · 10/08/2020 21:14

Didn’t realise you that what my Nan had - a mouli was still sold. Now I’m indecisive three ways!

I loooooove my mandolin. Use it all the time and it's excellent at what it does.

Cost about £10 in a hardware shop, and takes up very little space.

I do worry about mandolining my fingers though.

Lunaballoon · 11/08/2020 17:15

The mouli gives a nice shred iyswim, better imo than a food processor. This thread has inspired me to make some remoulade!

I have a fairly cheap, small processor from lidl. Its only a year old and the blades are going blunt and it cant handle harder veg. If you get a processor, check you can buy extra blades if needed, or they are made of better steel/metal and last longer. I'm in the process of buying a better quality one myself.

I also have a type of mandolin, BUT, it has an extra device that protects your hand and holds the food whilst it slices. Mine has wide and thin julienne options, along with just a slice for say potato rounds i've had it 15+ yrs and its still going strong! Something like the link (mine isnt bring orange though!!!):

AlwaysLatte · 11/08/2020 17:37

I use both, mandolin only really gets used for making dauphinois potatoes.

AlwaysLatte · 11/08/2020 17:38

My mandolin came with something that you hold the food with, not sure if you can get those separately.

gassylady · 11/08/2020 17:58

That looks fab Lunaballoon is it the three blade one i can see on amazon?

OP posts:
Lunaballoon · 11/08/2020 18:31

Mine’s pretty ancient but does have three blades and looks just like the Moulinex K1011014 julienne mill on amazon.

gassylady · 11/08/2020 18:36

Brilliant thanks will be investing in one of those.

My magimix lives in the counter, and has lasted for ever.
