Have tried meal planning

have tried budgetting

still seem to be binning too much food

have decided as of tomorrow, i will be buying food each day for our meals... and fresh fruit and veg...

so , anyone else do this ?

is it better?

depends on where you will be buying from...

When I became a SAHM I thought it would be lovely to shop at the local grocers/butchers etc every day and only buy what I needed for that day..

Then I realised how much I had spent at the end of the week, and soon gave that up.

It did stop me buying treats etc that we really didn't need, but it did get a bit tiresome and expensive..

I too end up throwing stuff away every week so will watch this thread with interest...

I find it is better, I nearly always buy supper that day for various reasons...mainly cos DD only spends a few minutes in the trolley and it makes me leave the house (am very pregnant so need to force myself on occasion!)

I always have staples in the cupboards that I stock up on once a week in case I can't get to shop though such as
apples
bananas
satsumas
frozen peas
Pasta
pesto
cheese
fishfingers
chips
potatoes
frozen mince
frozen sausages
bread
cereal
baked beans

I can manage for about 3 or 4 days with just what I have in the cupboards if necessary as well.

will go to local greengrocers or lidl, aldi , asda, wherever ! i have the time everyday, as mon - fri i am out to do teh school run twice a day, and at the weekend , the DCs like to go to the shop and choose a treat

if i am spending money all week doing a big shop and extras and still binning stuff, it is going wrong somewhere !!!

depends if you can be arsed going out every day to buy stuff
we meal plan and am being ruthless atm - DH wanted to go out for lunch but i refused and we ate what was planned
one of the best things to do is to cook in bulk and freeze

lulumama · 30/09/2007 18:48

I find it easier to do this way instead of meal planning as I don't know until lunchtime whether DH will be in for supper or not, so I don't know if I am feeding 1 or 2!

I do meal plan for DD but I cook her stuff in advance for lunch (scotch pancakes, chickpea burgers etc) and keep it in the fridge.
Other things I have to have are eggs, flour and butter, then I can make most things without leaving the house, including biscuits, which are a store cupboard essential IMO.

I've been doing this for a while lulu. I shop at least every other day sometimes at the supermarket and sometimes local/at market.

I don't think it's saving me money but I don't throw much food away, if any.

andiem · 30/09/2007 19:34

lulu I shop online and it saves me money as I don't impulse buy I just get what I need I do plan the week in advance but there is no ooh that looks nice etc etc just what we need

haychee · 30/09/2007 19:36

Yep, shop far too reguarly here too. Apart from spending more time in the shops than at home, it seems to work well for us. My wages cover food and i get paid each day in dribs and drabs so is practical like that. I dont know if i save much money, but i dont appear to be throwing much, if anything away.

lulumama · 30/09/2007 19:36

thanks chirpy.. i have the same with my DH

saggars, if i spend the same but there is less waste , i am still pleased with that !

andie.. i have tried that, but if i decide now what i want to eat on friday ,odds are, it will have changed a dozen times!

Plus you can work with days that you have a light tea planned but are so miserable and cold and stressed and tired that you want a big fat stew!
(that's me today!)
