Why did she put a banana on my curry?

Just that.

Growing up, homemade curry was a rarity, but whenever my DM made a curry she always chopped a banana on top.

Was this really a thing in the 70 and 80s? I’m making curry tonight and can’t imagine adding a banana.

Husband's mum does this, but then her "curry" is basically a chicken casserole with a pinch of curry powder in. They also add peanuts.

AlphabetDinosaur · 15/07/2020 18:14

Some of my family live in Sweden and they always order banana curry pizza. I was never convinced by it...

OllyBJolly · 15/07/2020 18:18

Definitely a 70s thing. You would get a wee tray with tinned pineapple chunks, desiccated coconut, sliced banana, sultanas and you scattered them on top of the curry. nothing like a real curry

saraclara · 15/07/2020 18:20

South African curries sometimes include banana.

OverTheRainbow88 · 15/07/2020 18:23

@VanilIaSugarr

Yes it sounds so wrong, but I dare you to try it!! Works better with left overs and reheat in microwave with a sliced banana in it!!!

Binglebong · 15/07/2020 18:25

I love banana on (not in!) curry, along with chopped dried apricot and desiccated coconut. Has to be the right curry though and the raw banana under rather than over ripe.

But I love fruit with savory stuff. Definitely pineapple on pizza here!Grin

Oooh, I love chopped banana in curried yoghurt with my curry, it goes really well.

RedElephants · 15/07/2020 18:37

That brings back a memory for me, My Mum used to put sultanas in hers Grin

JonHammIsMyJamm · 15/07/2020 18:39

Really 70’s, bananas and sultanas in really mild, really yellow curries.

BikeRunSki · 15/07/2020 18:39

My GM made “curry” in the 1970s/80s, which featured Bisto powder, hard boiled eggs, dessicated coconut, raisins and banana.

Haworthia · 15/07/2020 18:44

Egg and banana curry? The horror!

I married into an Indian family and have never, ever encountered banana anywhere near a curry Grin

MattBerrysHair · 15/07/2020 18:45

My dm made us eat banana curry as children in the 80's. Banana was the main ingredient and there were raisins, onion, garlic and a few other things that I can't remember. I bloody hated it! It was all slimy and mushy and gross Envy

Wisteria1979 · 15/07/2020 18:47

Mild curry powder with banana was a staple in our house in the 80s, more in an exotic casserole with chicken than proper curry though. Loved it then. Not sure how I’d feel about that now.

Sheenais · 15/07/2020 18:48

All those of you saying there were raisins in 70s curry. Are you sure? Sultanas yes, but never raisins.

Neolara · 15/07/2020 18:53

My parents are South African and we always had banana on our curries in the 70s / 80s.

GreyHare · 15/07/2020 18:58

@gnushoes

my mum used to have dishes of raisins, desiccated coconut and sliced banana to go with her 1970s curry. I wasn't keen.
Yes yes yes, my Mum did this too, little dishes so you could sprinkle them on your curry.
chipsandgin · 15/07/2020 19:03

Ooh, bananas, salted peanuts (!) & dessicated coconut - oddly on special occasions we'd get to go to the very fancy local Indian restaurant and I'm pretty sure they gave us bananas and peanuts with the curry there. The 70's were very weird for food!

GameSetMatch · 15/07/2020 19:04

My mum always put banana on the side of a curry, I loved it! I made a curry and put some banana on the side a few years ago my husband and kids turned their noses up at it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/07/2020 19:05

About 13 years ago a Chinese takeaway put banana into their special house curry.

Dh is still not over the trauma of that night.

Pomegranatemolasses · 15/07/2020 19:09

Those little dishes were known as 'boys' so ten boy curry would have ten of those glorious delights (or sambals), five boy would have five etc.

SheisMammyof2 · 15/07/2020 19:11

Ooh my mum used to do this too.. sliced banana and salted peanuts on the side for sprinkling. Delicious!

AtleastitsnotMonday · 15/07/2020 19:11

I started a thread about this a couple of weeks ago! My gran always served curry with sliced banana and peanuts but I’d never seen it since!

DixieFlatline · 15/07/2020 19:13

My old local place did a dish which was basically bananas and cream, it was always a toss up between that and a wonderfully sweet and creamy coconut one. I like hot curries just fine, but I’ll take a tasty creamy sweet one over them every time.

JacobReesMogadishu · 15/07/2020 19:14

I have a Mexican chilli type recipe, think from the Wahaca book, which has banana in it and it’s lovely.

Reallybadidea · 15/07/2020 19:14

My mum used to make something in the 1980s/90s that she called 'chicken paprika'. In reality it was roast chicken slathered with a sauce which had two ingredients: mushroom soup and curry powder. It was served with sliced bananas and tomatoes on the side. It was every bit as disgusting as it sounds. She's actually a very good cook, but likes to take shortcuts and use cheaper alternatives, so I suspect that it was a more elaborate recipe that over the years got gradually changed into this abomination Envy
