I've obviously been living under a rock as I've only just heard of JM. Love her website and her recipes look up our street.

Do any of you like her? I don't know which book to purchase first, please help me to make a decision.

I'm looking at A Girl Named Jack, Bootstrap Jack and 100 recipes.

Depends what your priorities are, I guess - vegan, low cost?

Not vegan, more low cost family food.

I borrowed A Girl Named Jack from the library as I had heard some good things and tried a few recipes, none of them worked well for me. Some of the other recipes (which I didn't make) were downright weird combinations of tinned foods. I have looked on her website occasionally over the years and the cooking methods are quite odd to me - there was a recipe for aubergine "parmagiana" which involved boiling the aubergine and blitzing it, then tossing with pasta, and there was also no cheese... and I seem to remember some kind of curry that had tinned mandarin orange segments. And some bread made of just flour and water but not flatbreads, like actually baked in a can (though I might be misremembering that one).

Anyway, her recipes aren't for me but have a look at the website, see if you find some things you like!

Ah, for budget friendly family cooking I like:

Jamie Ministry of Food
Jamie's Dinners
The Little Dish family cookbook
The Five O'Clock kitchen
Hairy Bikers mums know best books
Any of the Bill Granger family cookbooks, though perhaps less budget conscious - a lot of seafood in them which is more expensive here than in Australia I'm guessing
I've heard the Eat Well for Less family cookbook is good

She can't really cook. She suggests 'bunging' stuff in to stuff, and there you go. It all looks brown and unappetising and I'm told that that's how it tastes too.

I liked a lot of her recipes in A Girl Called Jack but wasn't so keen on her subsequent books.
