If a U.S recipe says one cup, what does it mean?

Not sure if it means cup as in teacup or mug. Anyone know what the UK measure would be? Thanks.

250ml, so probably best to check the size of your cups first!

Those measurements are made in actualy measuring cups that come in sizes: 1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/4 cup etc. Same with tbsp and tsp. Not the kind that are in your draw. American measurements are much simpler. No weighing or anything. Who has the time?
