..... well can you?

I know it sounds daft but I'm suddenly having a confidence crisis. Is it safe to give a 2.5 year old prawns (in my splendid prawn pilaf that I may or may not make for tea tonight)

help!

yes

it is not a hanging offence in EU countries

LilRedWG · 24/09/2007 15:29

I don't see why not. DD has them and she's 16 months old - just make sure you cook them well.

FLIER · 24/09/2007 15:30

my 16month old had them sat night. she's not keeled over just yet.

EmsMum · 24/09/2007 15:31

I seem to remember shellfish not being recommended till 3 years. But so long as they are fresh and cooked properly and your child doesn't tend to be allergic to things, its probably ok.

knickerelasticjones · 24/09/2007 15:34

thanks all - the prawns it is then!

So far DD has had pretty much exactly the same food as us but for some reason I suddenly came over all cautious and thought that prawns might be forbidden.

That said, I may have to smother them in whole grain mustard (her current favourite food in the whole wide world.....)

ta!

I must admit I would never have given my 1st born prawns at the age I gave my dd (16mths). So much more relaxed 2nd time around, it didn't even occur to me that dd possibly shouldn't get them .

Cappuccino · 24/09/2007 15:39

I thought you couldn't till they were 5 for some reason

can't remember why now

poor dd2 I have denied her

TellusMater · 24/09/2007 15:40

My mum gave ds seafood curry at 8 months. And then dealt with the resulting nappies...

Meeely2 · 24/09/2007 15:42

my 2.5 yo had welks

suzywong · 24/09/2007 15:42

good lord, do you really think other cultures - SE Asia for example where prawns are a precious source of protein and also used as a condiment in their dried form - wait for so long before giving them? Protein is important to kids and is traditionally welcomed with open arms when available.

Too much consumer choice these days

corblimeycharlie · 24/09/2007 15:44

I remember reading in a parenting book once that Inuit children do not suddenly acquire a taste for fish livers after being weaned on ham sandwiches .
It helped me wean my PFB without too many traumas.

LilRedWG · 24/09/2007 15:47

Just looked in the Birth to Five book andthe only reference I can find is not to give them under six months.

Jackstini · 24/09/2007 15:52

dd has had them from 8 months on - no probs

TellusMater · 24/09/2007 15:56

I should add the the nappies were foul due to the strength of the curry and not due to any adverse effects of prawns on the digestive system...

Hulababy · 24/09/2007 15:57

DD had prawns before she was a year old.

ja9 · 24/09/2007 16:06

i did...

...and that was raw in prawn cocktail

Bouquetsofdynomite · 24/09/2007 16:21

Never heard anything about not giving them at any age (post weaning obviously.)

Seona1973 · 24/09/2007 20:14

everything I have read says not to give them before 6 months and not to give them raw to children at all as they would then be at risk from food poisoning

biglips · 24/09/2007 20:20

yesss....my DD loves King prawns..She is 3 next week.

She started to have prawns when she was 1.5 yrs old.
