DD1 suffers from bad constipation - I was thinking maybe some oat biscuits might help. Also oat biscuits tend to be yummy and I am always keen to eat something yummy myself

anyone got a good (easy) recipe?

honey oat biscuits that I make with dd (3) ALL the time ...

125g butter
1/2 cup sugar
2 tblsp honey
1 cup floor
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 1/2 cups rolled oats (oats)

cream butter sugar and honey
sift flour baking powder and cinnamon together and add with the oats to the creamed mixture. stir well (I use my hands). roll tablespoons of mixture into balls. Place on baking tray (greased) and flatten with fork. Bake in preheated oven 180 deg c. for 15 minutes or until golden

thanks very much - will try - can I put brown flour in? she needs as much help as she can get frankly...
anyone else got any recipes with more oat in the mixture, though I guess I can just mess around with maskedposters...

Put 75g (3oz) of plain flour in a bowl with half a level teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda.

Add the same amount (75g) of demerara sugar and the same of porridge oats and stir together.

Heat 75g of butter in a pan with a tablespoon of golden syrup.

Mix it altogether and roll it into small balls (you should have about 24).

Set them well apart on a greased baking tray and bake at gas mark 3/ 160 C for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

These are yummy

Flapjack - any good?
150g marg or butter
75g sugar
3tbsp golden syrup
300g porridge oats
Melt fat, sugar & syrup, stir in oats.
Greased 7x7" tin, 20min gas 4.

Fruit and lots of water will ease constipation better than biscuits though

suzycreamcheese · 24/09/2007 15:46

try porridge?
lots and lots and lots of water

oaty recipes look nice though

jeangenie · 24/09/2007 15:47

thanks - we do the fruit/veg/water thing too (though she isn't great on the veggies I must admit)
just thought I could stick one of these in her lunchbox every day too, to help things along

OP posts:
jeangenie · 24/09/2007 15:48

she won't take porridge, unfortunately

How about muffins? heres a recipe that I adapted when my DD needed more fibre but wouldn't eat anything too obvious. Its lower than most in fat and sugar.

4oz self-raising flour
4oz wholemeal flour + 1tsp baking powder
(you can vary proportions of those to suit your need)

2.5 oz oat bran

1-2 tbsp cocoa if you want them chocolatey

Sift that lot together into large bowl and make a well in the middle.

In small bowl mash some very ripe bananas - about 8-10 oz.
add 1 egg, 1/3 cup veg oil and either about 1/2 cup brown sugar or 1/3 cup apple juice concentrate. [its all a bit approximate but always seems to come out ok].

Stir that lot together, add to the dry stuff and stir till just mixed. You can add about an ounce of raisins, chopped walnuts or chocolate drops too - whatever will get your DD to eat the muffins! Add some milk if needed - mix should be quite soft. Spoon into 12-hole muffin pan (I use paper liners so don't need to grease tin) and cook at 190C for 20-25 mins.

EmsMum · 24/09/2007 15:51

Oh yes and make sure she has a drink with the biccies/muffins or whatever...fibre without enough liquid aint going to move anywhere!

jeangenie · 24/09/2007 20:12

thanks - will try them all and see which she (and I!) likes

emsmum - whenever I make muffins they stick to the paper cases - not sure where I am going wrong

My muffins always stick to the paper when they are first made...just eat scraped off with spoon! They peel fine the next day. These muffins keep for a few days in a tin (provided my DH doesn't know they are there)

jeangenie · 24/09/2007 21:59

right - stuff for muffins being delivered in tesco shop tomorrow and have just bunged a strange concoction of oats, flour, olive oil, raisins, mashed banana, honey and vanilla sugar in oven. Couldn't measure anything as damn scales battery gone (KNEW should have stayed with old fashioned type, just KNEW it) but consistency looked good and sweetness quotient just about enough to ensure she'll eat the things (as long as she doesn't suss the banana)

how about muesli flapjacks?

same as basic flapjack recipe, but sustitute muelsi for oats.

I always add an oz more butter and tbsp of golden syrup though as I like 'em gooey!

jeangenie · 25/09/2007 09:06

thanks for the meusli suggestion - will try that
well, last nights weird concoction turned out delicious - just hope DD thinks so too (there is one in her lunchbox today instead of a chocolate biscuit risky strategy I know)

coincidence, I just made oatmeal/bran banana muffins:
Very easy:

  1. cream 1/2 cup brown sugar & 1/2 cup butter (or veg oil)

  2. stir in 2 mushed bananas + 2 eggs + 1/4 cup milk + 3tbsp honey (mollasse is a good substitute in case of constipation)

  3. add 1 cup wholemeal flour + 1/2 cup rolled oats + 1/2 cup oat or wheat bran + 2 tsp baking powder + cinamon and nutmeg to taste

  4. bake 15-20mn at 200 degrees

You can add chopped prunes or figs if desperate situation.

shrooms · 26/09/2007 21:07

Yeah give her a good old dose of stewed prunes and figs:

Cover prunes and figs with water and simmer or microwave till boiling then drain and serve.
Sorry not oaty I know but it does work...
