Pan for a messy cook

I seem to be struggling to get our meal for 4 in my Tefal 30cm frying pan. When making curry or chilli for example it ends up everywhere!!

The le cruseat style pans with the two handles and lids - can you use these on the hob to make the sorts of meals mentioned above or are these just for in the oven really? I’d just get Sainsbury’s probably!

This thread is a bit old now, but if you’re looking for guidance on which kitchenware to buy, we’ve recently refreshed our best wok, best frying pan and best saucepan pages with plenty of high-quality products recommended by Mumsnetters. We hope you find them useful.

I got a le creuset style pot in Aldi special buys because I really fancied one and use it for bolognaise and chilli now instead of frying pan - much easier to clean and keeps the hob much tidier. As we're working from home, I leave it simmer on hob on low heat - delicious!

Have you tried Saucepans? Frying pans are shallow and meant for frying or shallow amounts of food!

ShortAndSharp · 10/06/2020 20:42

You can definitely use the cast iron type le creuset casserole pots on the hob, but a deeper sided sauté pan (with an oven proof handle and lid) would probably be fine too.

I use a large non stick wok with a lid for almost everything I cook on the hob

karmakameleon · 11/06/2020 09:31

Cast iron ones will work but they are very heavy so I only use for things that start on the hob and need to be finished in the oven. I have sauté pan for ever day like this. It has deep sides and a lid so not so likely to spill over.

@bilbodog
You use for chilli? So would you fry off the mince first in frying pan then move to saucepan or do the whole thing in a sauce pan?

bilbodog · 11/06/2020 12:49

Spacepug - Chilli - would do the whole thing in a saucepan - i would probably use a wide shallow one for chilli or bolognaise but i wouldnt fry the meat in a frying pan and then put in the saucepan.

I tend to use good quality stainless steel casserole pans as these can be used both on top and in the oven. I know these ones are not cheap but ive been using the same ones for 30 years!

Etcni · 11/06/2020 12:57

Try something like this - it's lighter than a Le Creuset style casserole.

Holeywalls · 11/06/2020 12:59

Hi, I definitely want something I can do the whole thing in. I didn’t use a pot because I always fry mince and chicken in the frying pan so that would then mean transferring over to a pot. I only have one very small pot.

I like the look of those metal pans with the lids. I think that’s exactly what I need! Thank you.
