Ds is now 11 months old and has never been the greatest milk drinker since he was born. He only weighs 15 lb 7oz and has not put on any weight over the last 3 weeks. He has now stopped drinking milk alltogether he just refuses and pushes the bottle or cup away. Until 2 weeks ago he was having a feed at 10pm when we would wake him for this but even this he now refuses. We have tried everything you could think of to make the milk OK for him with no luck. The dietician says that he will now need to have calcium and iron suppliments with maxijoule to put into his solids. Please, has anyone else had this problem, how did you cope?

hi joshjunior, sorry to hear about your dilema with milk feeding. my ds is nearly 6 months and started to fuss at his feeds from 7 weeks. he just would not drink from the bottle. we soon realised that it wasn't the milk, it was in fact our arms! he hates being fed whilst in our arms, so we lie him down on his changing or play mat. he only takes a couple of oz then have to wait 30min before he takes the rest.

have you tried taking ds to an osteopath? i did and it really did help. ds started taking more milk. if he's a good solid eater, try increasing his solids. My mum said i never drank milk when i was a baby so at 2.5 months she weaned me onto solids and i was eating eggs, sasuages (all fatty unhealthy foods) by the time i was 1. but its never caused me any problems.

i'm sure others will be along soon to advise. i hope things get better for you.

Would he eat natural yoghurt mixed with fruit purees? My dd eats this for England, also cheese, milky puddings etc?

Clayhead · 11/10/2004 22:09

My dd is nearly 3 and hasn't drunk milk since she was 12 months and I stopped bf her. She has cheese, yoghurt etc. We've never given supplements of any kind, she has a balanced diet.

I would also think it was normal to stop putting weight on at around 1 year old. I think dd just got loger and thinner for quite a while!

I really don't think it's too much of an issue. We place a lot on milk in our culture but other cultures don't. I would think that trying again in a while when everyone is more relaxed might be an option?

Hi

My little boy is 9 months and from day 1 he was a nightmare with milk. I tried every different kind. but still made no difference. By the time he was 4 months he was on 2 bottles a day so 6 oz in 24 hours. My hv told me to start him on solids and get loads of protein into him so he lots of chicken, cheese and yoghurts (i used to give yoghurts when it would of been a milk feed). Now at 9 months he's on 3 good meals aday and only has a bottle at 7pm and one at 7am, but it's still a big fight wuth the bedtime one as I can only still get about 2 oz down him. I stressed out for months about this and nearly drove myself mad as I was so worried. Once or twice he has a mad moment and has 7 ozs in one go, god knows what thats all about.

I've stopped worrying now as I can't do much more about it and he seems healthy he was on the 25centile, but has now made it to the 50th now he is on solids.
I also make sure I mix as much milk as I can in with his food, which he finds ok.

Good luck

JoshJunior my son was the same to, i used to add extra milk in his foods, and also have you tryed giving him milk in his sleep, it works for me. Even now if his is awake he will not drink any milk, only in his sleep. good luck try not to worryas long has he is well that's more important.

Thanks everyone. As suggested, I put milk into every meal. Breakfast is greek yogurt and fruit, he has cheese sauce as part of every lunch and dinner. The dietician has said to add butter and cream but after doing this he finds things just too rich and either refuses it or throws it up thus actually decreasing the amount of food he eats. BTW how do you fit 3 meals and 3 snacks into a day when the poor mite is still full up from breakfast?!
