Tips on how to make celeriac taste less like celeriac

I got a celeriac in my veg box this week. I generally ask them to exclude it, as I don't like it, but they made a mistake, so here it is. Not wanting to waste food, I've chopped half of it, and am boiling it with some potatoes to make mash. Anything else I can do to make the taste a bit less pungent?

Cod, I'm doing it with mash already, but every time I open the pan I get an overwhelming whiff of, well, celeriac, so I was hoping for some other ideas on how to mask the taste.

soften some apples and mash together/puree with the celeriac and eat with pork or sausages. V. Nice (and I don't like celeriac either on it's own)

And you can freeze it in case you don't happen to have any pork handy.

Apples sounds like a good plan. Thanks, Gingermonkey.

Any other ideas still welcome, as I've got the other half in the fridge for another day.

with bacon somehow?
root vegetable dauphinoise?

Ditto - add mash, and a bit of garlic. It's lovely.

I use about 25% celeriac, 75% potato

uberalice · 21/09/2007 17:19

How do I freeze it? Cook it first, or just put it in raw?

Jamie O's roast chicken (the one with a lemon and parma ham)hasroasted celariac and roast potatoes.. it is scrum and you can hardly tell the difference between p abd c

freeze once cooked in apple/celeriac sauce mode. Grate it and add to shepherds pie, you can't taste it in that either (second spag bol idea - also works). You can grate it and make little rostis with it but they still taste like celeriac so not a lot of good . Ummmm, what else? Add to casseroles in tiny pieces, goes really soft and soaks up the casserole taste. You can eat it raw to, grate it into a salad (tastes nicer raw actually). I like celery very much, but not celeriac....why??!!! (can you also tell I have had a veg box with celeriac in a lot!?) Basically, my kids hate it and they eat it in all those guises and have never known (not the raw or rosti one...the hidden ones). Lordy, I am babbling here!!!!

There's lots of talk of meaty dishes here but we're having fish tonight. I hope it works out.

Gingermonkey · 21/09/2007 17:27

it'll be fine....and if it isn't at least you tried! (and not just chucked it in the bin like I did when the beetroots arrived....bleurgh!!!!)

uberalice · 21/09/2007 20:30

Thanks for all the tips everyone. I did the apple thing and it was quite nice. Ds1 was a bit suspicious, but he's 3 so no surprise there.

I'll give the garlic idea a try next time.

Hi everyone,
Just got celeriac in my veg box this week and spotted this thread - good timing - thank you!

Have found the following website with suggestions for celeriac recipes:
www.vegbox-recipes.co.uk/ingredients/celeriac.php

And Gingermonkey, it's got some tips for beetroot, too:
www.vegbox-recipes.co.uk/ingredients/beetroot.php

Thanks for all the celeriac ideas, everyone

Fingers crossed the toddler will eat it!
