Jars of Indian/Chinese/Thai sauces or pastes.

I usually cook from scratch, but a recent injury means I have to simplify all cooking.

Any recommendations for authentic sauces or pastes, please?

I'd especially like those "as good as my Mum/Auntie makes".

The Holy Cow Indian sauces are nice.
Feel better soon!

We like Spice Tailor sauces best, bit more expensive, but taste good.

The Spice Tailor - Butter Chicken is great. Wasn't keen on the Tarka Dhal though.

Hopeislost · 24/05/2020 19:02

For Thai food, the Mae Ploy pastes are the best! They're in a big white tub.

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 24/05/2020 19:05

Spice Tailor, some are great others not so.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 24/05/2020 19:06

My Thai SIL uses Mae Ploy too

Mix with can of coconut milk

Saag masala same one in co-op and aldi nice (spice in the top of jar one), the Thai kits in Aldi also very good!

I really like the Pataks tandoori paste but I like the "dry" curries not ones with masses of sauce

MuthaClucker · 24/05/2020 19:14

You have to order direct (I think) but the Nonya Secrets pastes and sauces are to absolutely die for.

WhereYouLeftIt · 24/05/2020 19:15

Pataks.

andyoldlabour · 25/05/2020 11:18

I like Pataks pastes, but not the sauces. The Vindaloo and Jalfrezi can be quite convincing with a bit of tweaking - more chopped garlic, extra chillis and fresh chopped coriander.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/05/2020 16:09

I like Mae ploy too

ChaoticCatling · 25/05/2020 16:30

I use the Simply Cook recipe and ingredient kits, pastes and seasonings for four recipes that fit through the letterbox. I haven't bought any pastes or similar from the supermarket since I started using them a year ago.

The spice tailor ones are delicious, the rogon josh one is my favourite. Following with interest though as I’m looking to find some more!

dudsville · 25/05/2020 16:48

I really live Source Tailor as well!

Bluebooby · 25/05/2020 16:51

The only jars/pastes I've used are pataks, and I don't really like them much. I think they all taste a bit samey. My sil uses a Tesco own brand one that she says is actually really nice. I'm not sure what the name is though.

handbagsatdawn33 · 25/05/2020 18:17

Thanks for all your replies, I'll give them a try.

Mr vikki Is Fantastic.

At the cheaper end of the market Aldi’s are absolutely fine. Won’t set the world alight but very good for the price.

I was recently recommended to use this company......they have some delicious spice mixes and the recipes are really easy to follow, so much so my kids can cook them unaided. www.thespicery.com/

The best readily jarred Thai curry paste I've used is sainsburys own. Not entirely authentic but fresh and zingy tasting. Would benefit from some added ground coriander, if you have it.

Agree that pstaks sauces taste of nothing. They used to seem so good, 20 years ago. Lloyd grossman sauces seem to live up to the name, too. Had a so called korma that tasted more like custard.
