DS eats my breakfast: sugar or Splenda?

DS is going through a phase of wanting to eat my cereal for his breakfast. He will not eat it if put in his own bowl - it has to be out of mine. I put Splenda on my cereal as I'm trying to lose weight. Should I put sugar on because DS is eating it, or will a tiny bit not do him any harm? (Splenda doesn't contain aspartame BTW, which is why I choose it over other low-calorie sweeteners.)

Couldn't you make the cereal, wait for DS to want a bit, put some in a little bowl for him to try and then add your splenda?

What does it contain though, will still be some dodgy chemical sweetener. Better to use real sugar just a bit less if you are dieting.

Personally i wouldnt eat sweetener myself let alone give it to my ds!

canmummy · 20/09/2007 11:42

Or put neither on?

CrookshanksinJimmyChoos · 20/09/2007 11:42

just seen that he won't eat it out of his own bowl! If it was me, I'd try to eat it without sugar for a few days so that he gets used to cereal without sugar? Failing that, normal sugar is probably better than artificial stuff....

Not putting either on would be better, but if you really must then I would choose sugar over sweeteners every time. Splenda might not contain Aspartame, but there are still some questions over it's safety.

Yuk.

Bin the Splenda.

OrmIrian · 20/09/2007 11:46

splenda is one of the better ones. It's made from sugar. But I'd still try to do without either if you can manage it.

PS I have the same problem with salt. I've cut right back and use lo-salt but I can't manage without any on my boiled eggs. DS#2 now wants 'salt on his toast like mummy'. I have to behave like it's some sort of class-a drug and use it in private

WigWamBam · 20/09/2007 11:47

How many calories are there in a teaspoon of sugar? 16? Certainly not enough to damage your diet.

fluffyanimal · 20/09/2007 11:47

OK I have just googled Splenda, and I can tell you I won't be eating any more (so neither will DS)!!

Or you could try fructose instead of normal sugar as its sweeter so use a bit less.

But frankly unless you're piling on dessertspoonfuls, the amount DS eats out of your bowl is not going to make much difference either way.

mishymoo · 20/09/2007 11:51

My DH has stopped using sugar on his ceral as DS and DH eat breakfast together. DS also wanted to eat from daddy's bowl. They now both have the same bowls so if DH does fancy sugar then it's not an issue 'cos DS thinks he is a big boy using a proper bowl IYKWIM!
