Fruit and vegetable storage

There is a lovely greengrocer near us who is doing fruit and vegetable deliveries.

It's delivered in a wooden pallet and the fruit and veg are unwrapped. How would you store these items? Everything in our fridge must be wrapped or in a container or it dries out very quickly.

Last time we had a delivery, we kept the veg in a cool part of the kitchen, but it started to go soft/bad before we could eat it all.

What does everyone else do?

Do you not have crisper drawers in your fridge? They’re designed to prolong the freshness of whatever’s in them. Crisper drawers have a different level of humidity from the rest of the fridge, optimising freshness in fruits and vegetables.

If you don’t have crisper drawers, or they’re not big enough, prep the fruit/veg according to your meal plan in advance and either freeze it or store it in plastic tubs with lids or bowls with clingfilm.

Our crisper drawers aren't big enough but also don't really keep things crisp. They dry out in there too, so maybe the problem is with our fridge.

It's one of those fruit and veg boxes where you just get an assortment of things, so I can't meal plan and prepare in advance.

Never store mushrooms in plastic - put them in a paper bag

Root veg should be stored somewhere cool and dark - not the fridge

Wrap lettuce in damp kitchen paper then into a plastic bag in the fridge

Keep any green veg in the fridge

Carrots - wash, dry, top and tail, store in tupperware type lidded container, will last for weeks!
Potatoes and Onions - remove from packaging, store in open baskets/ bowls in a cool dark part of your kitchen.
Leafy veg - wrap in kitchen roll (use loose rubber band to keep everything together) and store in the fridge unwashed. Alternatively, remove stalks, wash, air dry and store in a lidded container wrapped in kitchen roll.

Tomatoes - TV chefs say this is sacrilege but mine go in a box in the fridge (no lid). Put firm ones at the bottom, softer ones at the top.
Fruits in the crisper drawer, again no packaging, just an open box/ basket.
Bananas and firm avocados in a fruit basket on the kitchen counter. Avocados when they are ready to eat go in the crisper drawer with rest of the fruit.
