sponge cake layers - only have one tin

dc wants to make a layered sponge cake.
can I bake the different layers (simple sponge, different colourings) in one tin?

You can. You'll need to bake each layer until it's just firm, before you put the next layer on though, otherwise it'll fall through into the previous layer.

Do you mean, can you cook all the layers at the same time? No you can't, the colours will all bleed together. Sponges cook very quickly, so just make a layer, cook it, wash out the tin and cool it down fully before doing the next layer.

Dd sent me a picture of one she'd done this week. It's not great, but she was experimenting apparently!

but if I cook separately will it not dry out whilst waiting?
and how long would a 1 egg sponge take to bake?

oh @MaureenMLove that looks a lot like what dc want to achieve

It won't dry out, not if you are just churning one sponge out after the other. Or if you want to do it in advance, sponges freeze perfectly well.

PETRONELLAS · 15/05/2020 19:09

How big is your tin? A 2 egg in an 8 inch is about 30 mins 180.

MaureenMLove · 15/05/2020 19:12

A one egg sponge isn't going to go far.

bluefoxmug · 15/05/2020 19:13

not sure about inches, it's 20cm diameter I think.

sorry a big confused. we want to make 3 layers, each being a 1egg sponge.

arg, so normally I would make a 3egg sponge in this tin, slice in half for filling, icing if fir special ocassion.

Not at the same time. You'll have to bake each individually in the oven in the one tin that you have, washing it out and drying it in between uses.

bluefoxmug · 15/05/2020 19:27

thanks all

You could make up the 3 egg mix and then divide it into 3 bowls, add the colour and cook as I described. It does work. It's right there for the proof!Grin

bluefoxmug · 15/05/2020 20:18

thanks. I showed dc your dd cake.

dc asked if there id lettuce, cheese and ham in the middle. Shock

Lol! I believe it was black currant jam and I think she'd coloured the butter cream with yellow colouring. I have no idea what she was trying to achieve tbh, but I did get a slice delivered and I have to say it was bloody lovely!Grin

bluefoxmug · 16/05/2020 15:02

it sort of worked.
but we need to figure out a better proportion of colourant.
