Am I over reacting- Nursery gave DS (aged 15 month) hotdogs for his tea!

Hi

Thats it in a nutshell. He goes to nursery 3 days a week and until very recently had excellent meals. It started to go down hill (it has changed hands recently) and when I picked him up last night they gave me the usual report of his activities and said he had hotdogs for tea. Last week it was baked beans that made me flinch. Am I over reacting? Thanks in advance

what is wrong with baked beans?

hot dogs as a one off is not so terrible

they might be lacking a decent cook if they have just changed hands

smeeinit · 18/09/2007 14:12

ugh hotdogs! made from arse and teeth and anything else laying around on the factory floor!
i wouldnt be very happy with that atall, beans not so bad though.

fluffyanimal · 18/09/2007 14:14

Baked beans are an excellent food for children, being high in protein and carbohydrate and low in sat fats.

Hot dogs, however, are a bit more . But within the context of a very varied diet I wouldn't be too concerned. If the menu in general deteriorates, I'd raise it with them, but not for one dish in isolation.

Cheap'n'nasty food, it sounds like their trying to make savings. How much are you paying this nursery?

No I don't think you are over reacting. Hot dogs are junk food. I would be pissed off if my child was given them at nursery. Baked beans are full of sugar and salt and are a processed food so not brilliant either.

However as lulumama says maybe they need some time to sort things out.

Brangelina · 18/09/2007 14:16

or they're, even.

Seona1973 · 18/09/2007 14:16

it depends on the make of the hotdogs - some of them have a high percentage of meat in them. Nothing wrong with baked beans though - they count as 1 of your 5 a day fruit/veg portions

belgo · 18/09/2007 14:17

I wouldn't be happy about this. It seems quite lazy of the nursery. I assume you are paying for his place? Nurseries in the UK cost a fortune don't they? I would certainly expect better food.

BBBee · 18/09/2007 14:17

added sugar is better than sweetneres IMO

you can get whole earth ones made with apple juice - sainsburys 'free from' aisle or health food shops.

browncat · 18/09/2007 14:17

paying them too much 566 a month for 3 days a week OWCH

belgo · 18/09/2007 14:18

would expect gourmet Michelen starred food for that amount.

Nurseries in Belgium are far cheaper and the food far better.

witchandchips · 18/09/2007 14:19

think dodgy food is par for the course, our nursery (really excellent in other ways) offers pizza, potato wedges and sphagetti hoops as one of its rotating menus.

OMG, I pay 590 EUROS a month for full time 5 days a week and my DD eats wholesome, home-cooked meals, nothing ever comes out of a tin. I would be pulling her out of there if it did.

lulumama · 18/09/2007 14:21

oooooh

would expect excellent food for that !!

belgo · 18/09/2007 14:22

nurseries cost even less in Belgium. The most you'll pay is 400 euros a month full time. And the food is always fresh.

NObody has brought this up yet, so I will. OFSTED do have a requirement that food is nutricious. I would not say that hotdogs fit htat category. If it was a one off (cook didn't turn up or something) they probably wouldn't care. But if it is the way they are cooking all the time, they are breaking their registration requirements.

browncat · 18/09/2007 14:28

thanks IlanaK thats really useful

OK, not the most nutritious item granted and not something to eat everyday as that wouldn't be a balanced diet... but ultimately, it's just a hot dog!!! Not poison

SofiaAmes · 18/09/2007 14:50

You might also want to check what was served with the hotdog. A hotdog by itself is not a fully balanced meal. A hotdog served with vegetables, a starch, fruit for desert and a glass of milk to drink, although not exactly what I would choose to eat, is at least a fairly nutritionally balanced meal.

I had a terrible time trying to find a nursery for my children that served nutritious food. In the end, I kept them at my lovely childminders until reception, because her food was so much healthier.

browncat · 18/09/2007 14:53

good point - I'll check the whole meals - i don't know if it was related but he was so 'wired' last night, running around one minute, crying the next. Although that could also be teething and/ or nappy rash!!
