Simple but effective children's birthday cake ideas please!

I can make cakes fine so no prob. there, I can't use that roll on icing to cover the cake but can make shapes etc to stick on - I make a mean buttercream or chocolate fudge icing. Any ideas please - oh and the cake is for a first birthday. Thanks!

oooh Mrs B! I think that may be a step to far for my skills, can envision (sp) meringues sliding down the side of the cake!

get MINI swiss rolls .. the regular swiss roll is far too thick .. I learned by experience .. for DD I ended up getting the Cadbury's ones

actually tell a lie .. the white castle I used the ready rolled icing you can buy in supermarket and apricot jam

for the pink castle I did for DD last year I did the royal icing route
