Using pickled silverskin onions

handbagsatdawn33 · 02/05/2020 18:53

DH bought a huge jar, I use maybe 6-8 per month on pizzas - onions, not jars.

I've tried googling , but I get how to make them, not how to use them.

Only suggestion was to wash off the vinegar & use in boeuf bourguignon; vinegar does not wash off.

Any suggestions, please?

This recipe uses a good few - it's an American onion soup one but easily convertible to UK measures.

Eat them with cheese, cold meats, on salads. Yum

They will keep for many, many months.

Ice cold vodka martini with 2 little onions. Repeat while staring at the family accusingly and humming You Only Live Twice.

Lovely in beef & ale casserole or a stifado

Cream crackers, spread cheese, silverskin onions are a lovely snack

Cheese, pineapple & silverskins on sticks Grin

Just sit down with a cocktail stick and a jar and get your snack on. It's good to have some little cubes of cheddar too, just to take some of the acidity away between onions.

They go great with pork pie and cottage cheese too.

Poke them straight into hot mashed potato. Best thing ever.

On little sticks with cocktail sausages coated in honey and mustard. So delish!

They are nice with salad.

inwood · 02/05/2020 21:24

Eat them with cheese, all the cheese. The only way.

georgialondon · 02/05/2020 21:28

What @inwood says. My favourite!

Pickled onion sandwiches. Yummy

Fab with hot boiled gammon or sausages. Or with cold roast beef or pork, sausage sandwiches, or a robust pâté.

Rinse thoroughly under running water then soak over night I water with a tea spoon of salt and 2 of sugar. Rinse again the next day then finely chop and fry before adding to a tomato based sauce.

  1. Open jar
  2. Get fork
  3. Stab onion
  4. Eat onion
  5. Repeat

If you have to, add cheese

therona · 02/05/2020 22:06

I could eat a whole jar on its own.

Elouera · 02/05/2020 22:08
  • Chop, mix with cheese and use as a sandwich filler
  • Use with cheese on crakers
midwestsummer · 02/05/2020 23:27

Cheese, pineapple & silverskins on sticks

Then you put them in an orange and make a hedgehog 🦔

Thanks for the replies.
I meant to say use in cooking, so I'm going to try soaking in water, sugar & salt to get rid of the vinegar.

If you put them in a casserole or something you really won't notice the vinegar once it's cooked.
