How can I use up a mad amount of bad cooking wine

Crazy sub that I can’t return.

I slopped some into gravy - and it smells like every cheap hotel dining room I ate in over the last millennium.

I can’t even mix it into drinks because it has salt in it.

Really don’t want to waste it - normally a very creative cook - but struggling here!

Salty wine?

blog.brightcellars.com/red-wine-fabric-dye/ You could dye with it? Tannins can help with dyeing. If indeed it is actual wine with tannins in.

A craft project with it would be awesome - would salve my guilt without having to ingest it - but unfortunately it’s white. White wouldn’t work for that project - would it...?

Its a blend of real wine, dealcoholised
wine and salt. Smells like cheap white wine sauce from the 70s iykwim.

Turn it into vinegar, then clean with it?

I wouldn't cook with it if it's that nasty! You'll just waste other ingredients.

notapizzaeater · 26/04/2020 13:09

Chutneys ?

Conkerts · 26/04/2020 13:09

How can I turn wine into vinegar...? That would help - I use a lot of vinegar

maiwa.com/pages/guide-to-natural-dyes#6 At a push, the tannins will still be a mordant but you'll need something else to give colour. Maybe red cabbage?

Conkerts · 26/04/2020 13:11

The wrecking everything it touches is a real
dampener on my creativity.

It is like the opposite of a madeleine. Retrieves every bad food memory from my childhood in one boozy sniff.

Honestly it's so rare that I throw out food but this may be one I would throw down the sink if only for psychotherapeutic reasons.

HoppingPavlova · 26/04/2020 13:13

Just toss it. Way too much effort for what will be so little return on ending up with something half-decent out of it.

Elouera · 26/04/2020 13:14

If its too awful to drink, you shouldn't use it in cooking either!

What do you mean by salty wine??? Did it come in the bottle like that, or did you add the salt yourself for some reason? I'm intrigued what brand it is and what salty wine would normally be used for? Surely its not for drinking?

Could you make sushi vinegar with it?

FenellaMaxwell · 26/04/2020 13:16

God life is too short - just pour it away!

Ffsnosexallowed · 26/04/2020 13:16

Throw it out!

Conkerts · 26/04/2020 13:19

It’s a cooking wine. They added the salt.

I picked up some groceries from a wholesaler - and this got mixed in with my order for some reason. Presumably the salt is to make it revolting so the sous chefs aren’t tempted to siphon any off to make their shifts go faster. It is truly abominable.

Use it for pickling
Give it away as Christmas presents to people you don't really like but feel obliged to give a present to

Conkerts · 26/04/2020 13:22

Can you use wine for pickling?

I had some idea of reducing, mixing with cream and freezing to put into sauces - but the flavour really doesn’t improve any dish - and then I end up with more shitty product to use up.

Lordy! Does it kill viruses? It sounds bloody noxious enough.

Conkerts · 26/04/2020 14:57

Ooooh! There’s a marketing idea!

Does anyone have a direct email for Donald Trump? I’m sure he’d be fascinated to hear about the speculative potential benefits of gargling with bad salted wine.

I was looking this afternoon at what a local wholesaler sold, their stock list changes every time I look at it. They had the cooking wine but theirs is red. Well, it comes in a red box so I assumed it was red. I will not look at it again now.

Pour it down the sink, I know we're living in times where food waste is a sin but I'd argue that your so-called wine was never potable to start with.

TomPinch · 28/04/2020 03:40

Wine with salt added? I never heard of such a thing.

Could you use it to clean the toilet??

sashh · 28/04/2020 04:21

I was about to suggest vinegar. And I do have a cook book with a 'recipe' for it which I will look for later. Just need a coffee ATM.
