sweet potatoe question??

ds is waking in the night ,and not sure if this is due to his teething, hunger or a bit of both. Just noticed in Gina Ford's sleep book that she lists exessive amounts of sweet potatoe as one of the foods that can cause night wakings in babies. Why would this be? I make ds's casseroles for lunch with sweet potatoe as opposed to ordinary potatoe, and he has 3 cubes of sweet potatoe for tea with 3 cubes of other veg. Anyone know anything about this? Decided not to use ordinary potatoe yet as heard they can cause problems in babies with fh of allergies.

I'd love to see hard evidence of this - have there really been trials with babies given sweet potato and other babies not given sweet potato, that found that the SP babies woke more in the night? And what does she mean by 'excessive'. I find it hard to imagine that this is based on anything other than anecdote, like all that "Don't eat cabbage / onions / orange juice" stuff you get when you're breastfeeding.

Am totally prepared to admit I'm wrong if someone could show me proof - but personally I'd be surprised if sweet potato was causing any problems. Much more likely to be teething / hunger / cold or just plain ordinary baby being awkward and deciding to wake for no apparent reason!

cut down the sweet potato and see? Replace it with rice or something.

I remember feeding my DS sweet potato, and his poo came out bright orange! But sleep was unaffected...

Think you might have to experiment. DS was waking and having a cry about 9.30pm...had search on here and found other people who had had the same experience (even down to the same waking time) when feeding babies baby rice in the evening. I think it was to do with the way it turned to water in their tummies.
Anyway, the mixture I find works for me is:-
a scoop of baby rice, a scoop of baby organix cereal, 1 cube sweet potato, 1 cube apple puree. Sounds mad but he likes it !

Pidge, my thoughts were the same, as she doesn't really say why or how she found certain foods cause night wakings. Really am clutching at straws at the minute(see my thread on teething/hunger, also jenthehens similar thread on 7mth night wakings in sleep section!!)Soupdragon, will try the rice with his veg tonight though just to see, will try anything at the moment!! Meanbean, his poo is all kinds of colour and texture at the minute-lovely!!

judd, thats interesting what you say about the rice. He never wakes early in the night. Its always between 4 and 6am, last night was the earliest ever at 2.30am. btw, does baby rice turn to water in their tummies??

alibo - lots of sympathy - it's the cruellest thing when they start waking in the night having previously been sleeping ok. If you're looking to dilute or replace the sweet potato - given that it's completely unrelated to normal potato - you might be best off looking for other sweetish vegetables, e.g. carrots, squash, parsnips.

judd - that recipe sounds rather yum, actually!

alibo · 07/10/2004 14:53

btw, judd, what age is your ds, and what time does he have this combination? I have to be careful what I give ds for tea, as it can really put him off his bedtime milk.

ok, last night felt he was stuffed, but still woke at 3.30am and seemed hungry. Gave him a 6oz bottle with 4 scoops formula, and he went back to sleep till 7ish. For tea at 5.30pm he had 4 teaspoons baby rice made with formula mixed with 3 veg cubes. Then at 7 he had 7oz bottle. Then after that he had another 3 teaspoons of baby rice and formula with 3 cubes of sweet potatoe mixed in. What can I do to fill him more??, if I give him something too "filling" at 5ish, he will refuse his bedtime bottle, hance spliting his "tea" into some before the bottle at 5, and some after the bottle. Would him having a bigger breakfast make any difference. Have not persisted with this yet, as he doesn't seem bothered about breakfast after the bottle, even 1hr or so later. Plus the times I have got him to have more breakfast, he is put off his lunch, which I can't give him much later than midday as he is then very tired!! HELP!!

I've used sweetpotato in nearly all my dd's recipies and she is now 1. SHe has always slept really well, only waking when she has a bad cold or teething. I agree with others that its just a matter of experimenting with different things.

I read somewhere that it's the cumulation of what they've eaten all day that sees them through the night - not just their last meal. So I tend to try and stuff ds at every opportunity!
ds is 7 mo and I was really surprised to see the size of portions my friends was giving her 8mo - it was huge! I think maybe I've been underfeeding ds. He has a jar of stage 1 baby organix for lunch and maybe half a jar of pudding stuff. then a bit less for dinner. But my friend was giving almost 3/4 a bowl of mush stuff to her lo and my lo took almost as much when he was fed at her house.
