Can I feed my wedding cake after it's been cut?

We got married this weekend in a tiny ceremony, and will be celebrating properly when we can....

However, we cut our wedding cake for a photo and for the family who were FaceTiming us to see!

Now we have a large, iced cake (made by a lovely friend) with just 2 slices missing. The cake was finished sooner than had been anticipated, and really needed more feeding. So my question is, can I carry on feeding it now, so we can share it later? And if so, should I remove marzipan and icing? Any other tips please?

It's a lovely cake and I'd hate to end up feeding it to the birds (although they might be very grateful Smile)

Congratulations! How exciting Thanks

Yes, I would remove the marzipan and icing, and then recommending feeding. It may be worth cutting the cake up further (eg into 2 smaller pieces), so that you can store it with the 'cut' sides covered or just covering the cut area with greaseproof paper etc.

I don't know whether this compromises the longevity of the cake though, as it has been cut.

What would you feed it? What do cakes eat? Vanilla essence? Grin

Congratulations on your wedding!

Yes take of icing and marzipan and feed it (alcohol for pp, it helps keep fruit cakes, mine last over a year).

Ahh wonderful. Thanks couchlover. A brilliant idea at this time to ensure everyone will get a chance to eat it Cake

Haha @ZigZaggyZoo - alcohol (best - brandy and amaretto are my favourites), black tea or even orange juice!

Alcohol would obv be best to help preserve the cake.

Thank you so much, and thank you for wedding wishes - it was a bit of a rollercoaster. I will now raid the drinks cupboard to see what's suitable - we're lightweights on the drinks front but I'm sure there's some emergency whisky in there Smile

You can also freeze fruit cake with its icing if you have any room in your freezer.
