Not sure if I should be posting this here or in the home & garden section but here goes.

I’m at a loss for how to store spices in my new kitchen. I’ve a drawer set aside for the purpose but am stumped by what to store them in, how to organise them etc. Help!

Pics and links to products especially appreciated!

We have spices in the little spice jars from Ikea, upright with the lids labelled, in alphabetical order. You can also store the Ikea jars kind of half on their side, so the contents are visible

KarenW · 28/02/2020 17:05

mine are all in alphabetical order too, how sad!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 28/02/2020 17:21

Nah, it’s not sad; just makes finding them easier and quicker.

I have spice rack envy. Our kitchen is very small, so I keep my spices in small jars in old ice cream cartons in a cupboard.

However, the lids are beautifully labelled using my Brother P-Touch labelling machine.

This is a cutlery depth draw with Tesco spices.
I like how they're immediately to hand but not getting greasy on the bench.

This is how I know I'm not a proper grown up....I have oregano, curry powder and 5 spice. In a cupboard. I dont know what I'd do with all the spices....although they all look lovely! Grin

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 29/02/2020 08:35

@phyllidia wow that’s so satisfying 😌

Ginfordinner · 29/02/2020 08:52

I don't have enough drawers in my kitchen to do thatphyllidia. I'm so jealous. Spices aren't meant to be kept on a workbench as they lose flavour quickly.

lastburritos I made a delicious lamb bhuna (a Tom Kerridge recipe) yesterday, using various Indian spices. I even made my own Garamond masala (a Madhur Jeffrey recipe if anyone is interested)

Ginfordinner · 29/02/2020 08:53

Garam masala! Bloody auto correct!

MrsSchadenfreude · 29/02/2020 08:55

Mine are all in packets stuffed into a huge lock n lock box. Sad

OchAyeThaNoo · 29/02/2020 09:05

I have really limited storage in my kitchen so have to have two large racks attached to the wall.
I was talking about spice racks recently and two friends looked a bit confused and asked why I needed all those spices as they don't have any.

My MIL and SIL also don't own any either. Not a single dried parsley, no oregano or basil, no Paprika, and turmeric is just a funny word to them.
SIL has a tub of curry powder, some salt and some ground black pepper. Nothing more. And MIL has just salt and pepper. That's it. How do people cook without them? I mean, what do they eat?

Ginfordinner · 29/02/2020 09:12

Your friends and in laws must eat a very unimaginative diet OcheAye

DearTeddyRobinson · 29/02/2020 12:29

Bit of a mess Blushbut broadly in alphabetical order. The difficulty is having different shaped jars- I'm going to investigate the Ikea ones!!
Like PP I can't imagine cooking without all of these, what do people eat??

I have a herb bed in the garden, and a bay tree, so I always have fresh bay, rosemary and sage all year round. And in the summer I have fresh mint, thyme, parsley and chives as well.

TheDogsMother · 29/02/2020 12:43

I love mine but there's no real order to it

@bilbodog @KarenW These are very inspiring - what are you using to label the jars?

OP posts:
KarenW · 29/02/2020 18:13

Used a box of round stickers from Amazon and just wrote the labels.the stickers are about a centimeter across.

bilbodog · 29/02/2020 22:11

Tulip - i got some sticky labels from Amazon that had all the usual herb and spice names already printed on

7salmonswimming · 29/02/2020 22:25

Bloody hell! So many spices! Do you all use them, or are some of them one-offs for a specific recipe?

Think I might need to up my cooking game

kevintheorangecarrot · 01/03/2020 08:43

Oh god... my spice drawer is RAMMED... too much in fact! I have indian spices, English spices, Chinese spices, whatever else! I built it all up over the years and just restock now when it gets empty. So It is completely full! I regularly cook from scratch so they're always needed. Any recipes at all that calls for seasonings / spices, I can guarantee you I've got them right there.

thinkfast · 01/03/2020 08:47

Our spice drawer is 2 (fairly shallow cupboards). I had no idea people kept their spices in a drawer!

Bluesheep8 · 01/03/2020 10:31
