About 240, depending on which system of conversion you use. They're only a few ml's of from each other, though.

One US cup is 8 fl oz, if you are able to convert from floz to ml.

Thank you thank you thank you! Now I can go and start icing this cake!

Kate&TheGirls, I'm thinking of buying a UK cookery book (maybe cake baking) for ds1's Jewish in-laws in LA. If I included something with which to measure out ingredients, do you think they'd use it or would they think "What a cr@p present!"? They love coming to Europe and are well travelled but I'm not sure how receptive Americans are to our recipes. Wdyt?

KateandtheGirls · 03/10/2004 16:28

No, I think that's a nice idea. I guess you would have to buy them a set of scales, because in the UK a lot of things are weighed (especially in baking), whereas in the US they are measured by volume.

I bought my Dad (in England) an American cookbook once and with it gave him a set of cup measures, so that he could measure out the ingredients.

Just thinking though, a cake baking book might be more tricky, not only because of the measuring aspect, but I think a lot of ingredients are a bit different. Like self raising flour. I don't think we have that here, but we have cake flour. (I'm not sure about all this though. I rarely bake here and I never baked in England.) My instinct would be a more general English cookbook, like Delia or something.

Um, can I say something too? I've been looking at a lot of British baking recipes, and found a lot of them too difficult to easily make. The names for a lot of ingredients are different that what we call them here, and some we just plain don't have. I can figure out what the recipes are calling for, but I have to google a lot of the ingredients first, and a lot of the things I am unable to get here. However, if they live in LA, I am sure they would be able to get the ingredients, but not necessarily at their local grocery store. They might have to go to a specialty store. I think if they are really into cooking, they would enjoy it though. Sorry to interrupt. HTH

Oh, and besides sending scales, you might want to send something that measures in mls unless the book has conversions, too. I'd say a large number of American's can't readily convert ml's into cups. The only reason I can is because I worked in pharmacy and had to take an entire course on converting into 3 different measuring systems. And our measuring cups don't really come marked in ml's.

Good point Colin's Mom. They will be used to measuring volime in fl oz, so if the cookbook has ml they will need help with that.

Hmm, food for thought here, Kate&tg and CM. (Sorry about the pun!!) Maybe I'll get my hide into town and browse in a bookshop for something easier to use but attractive. I'm running out of ideas - I can't possibly give them any more books on the scenery/architecture/wildlife/culture of Scotland!!

Oops, forgot to say thank you for your comments, so Thank You!

A lot of English cookbooks are now made with us/uk measurements(it will give both side by side), I have a few. If the person who you are buying the book for is a person who cooks a lot the will appreciate the cookbook no matter if they can get all the ingrediants. One suggestion would be to do a goole search for uk/usa ingredients substitutes and print it to give with the book. Golden syrup is one thing that comes to my mind that we don't have in the USA and Corn syrup is one thing I haven't found here.
