apples, sugar, a teensy bit of whiskey or brandy.... boil it all up together till it's squishy.

flour, sugar, butter.... mush it all up till it's mixed together (but not smooth) put it on top of your apply stuff and bake in the oven till the top goes brown.

Yummy

google Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's crumble recipe from last week's Observer.

It was for a plum and honey crumble but you can use the topping for an apple crumble too (I used it for a very nice apple and pear crumble).

Unless the apples are very sharp, I would not bother stewing them first, just slice thinly and place in bottom of ovenproof dish and sprinkle with however much soft brown sugar you think they need (I don't like my crumble too sweet, myself).

flour (8oz) butter (3oz) sugar (3oz).

I like it best if you use half oats, half flour.

Soften apples by cooking in a bit of water, some sugar and maybe some cinnamon/cloves.

Rub crumble ingredients until resemble fine breadcrumbs (or whizz in a food processor)

Put the crumble on top of the apples

180 for 30 minutes or so, until just browning on top.

A tiny bit of water BTW. Just a splash.

I use 2 handfuls of oats, 2 handfuls of flour, a handful of sugar and about 1/3 of a packet of butter. I'm also very lazy and mix the dry stuff together , melt the butter in the mic and stir in which saves rubbing in the butter.

also add mixed spice or cinnamon or whatevers in the cupboard. Sometimes put cloves in with the apple too

ooo fantastic thanks

stayed with SIL and her family last week for a few days and DH and I both got a "taste" for proper deserts - and I figured seen as though there were some apples reduced to clear at Morrisons this morning that a crumble would be rather nice LOL.

Crumble mixture: 40z plain flour/2 oz butter/margarine; 2oz sugar (demerara can be nice instead of granulated). Rub fat into flour, mix in sugar.
Peel and slice apples, put into dish and sprinkle with sugar. (You can put a clove or cinnamon in as well if being a bit fancy).
Spread crumble on top of apples trying to cover all of apples (you may need more crumble mixture depending on how much apple mixture you have and how big your dish is).
Bake in oven - around 180C Gas 4 for about half an hour (or until it looks "done")

Hope you've got some cream to go with it - or vanilla icecream!

A good one for a winter's day, but it's actually quite warm and sunny with us at the moment, hence my suggestion of cream or ice-cream. Although I like cold ready-made vanilla custard a lot too [greedy emoticon]...

mmm - thanks everyone - just eaten some of my own apple crumble and custard and it was very yummy
