Child friendly fajitas - how do you make yours?

I want to try these for my 4 year old & 18 month old. Me & my partner usually buy the packet mix but this seem to spicy for the little ones to have.
Didn’t know if anyone followed a particular recipe or they recommend anything?

Thanks

I use this recipe and adjust to taste.

I still use the packet, but only add half the spice mix and leave the salsa off for DD(2). I usually make up some non-spicy guac for her to have with them as well.

I use the old El Paso mild BBQ spice mix and only add a little bit to DS's (12 months). He loves it. There is a milder version (it's a sauce - I think it's called "cool" but it has dairy so it's out for us). I have also made my own spice mix and just left out the chilli / cayenne for DS.

We use the old El Paso box mix, the mild one, it’s not spicy at all, tomatoey but lovely, we have it as more of a build your own wraps type thing so along with the chicken and the tortillas we do some baked beans, some cheese, some lettuce, wedges, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes. We’ve always done this and even our 3 yr old loves this meal. When doing tacos, we use the mild garlic and paprika satchet and they all enjoy that too.

Annabel Kramer has a good recipe

We just make some plain chicken for DD. She's got cmpa so can't have the mild old el paso one but also find all the packet ones are too salty for kids really.

kateandme · 10/02/2020 13:04

cook as you usually would then seperate some out.cook the rest in what you and dp want. then transfer this to a bowl and put the kids bit back in the pan.and the remnents of your meal and the scraping from the pan is enough to season it for beginners mouths.and then gradually increase.letting them try bits of yours each time.
serve with some mint riata or tzatziki too

I was never a fan of the packet mix so have always just made veggie/kidney bean fajitas with garlic, ground cumin, ground coriander, paprika and fresh coriander. Dp adds chilli separately to his.

Really its just a veggie wrap for dd as she doesn't like guacamole or soured cream!

SweetPeaPods · 10/02/2020 19:12

My 2 dc like the mild Asda fajita kit (pink box).

Magpiefeather · 10/02/2020 19:17

We cook chicken mini fillets in the oven with some spices sprinkled on top, then we usually make a v quick salsa and chop up avocados, tomatoes, peppers, prep a bowl of leafy veg or basically whatever salad stuf we’ve got in the fridge. Then let everyone build their own. DD loves it and eats way more veg this way. Might not be traditional fajitas but still great!

CottonSock · 10/02/2020 19:18

Everyone builds their own..kids gets served before spice added

lazylinguist · 10/02/2020 19:19

I've never used a packet mix. Just use whatever spices you want, according to taste.

SnugglySnerd · 10/02/2020 19:21

I just sprinkle on a little smoked paprika for the kids and then plaster mine and dh's in chilli sauce!

Beerandpancakes · 10/02/2020 19:21

diethood.com/homemade-fajitas-seasoning-mix/ but with very reduced amount of chilli powder

Pegase · 12/02/2020 06:46

Incidentally children can eat spice as well as adults - you just need to build them up to your level slowly!

SweetPeaPods · 12/02/2020 09:09

Pegase They can but they don’t all like it.
My 7 year old hates any food that is spicy or too much garlic. He finds a korma spicy where as my 4 year old loves a good spicy chilli. Personal preference plays a part too. I haven’t done anything different with them and expose both of them to the spicy food I eat. However they do both like the mild Asda fajita kit as mentioned up thread. It’s not too bland that DH and I can’t enjoy it too.
