Looking for the worlds most basic yet delicious recipe for shepherds/ cottage pie. Low on ingredients high on taste! If anyone has any secret tips or anything that would be awesome. It's to be eaten by a family of 5 but over different times because of work. Thankyou Thanks

I use this recipe, which calls for quorn mince instead of meat. i'm not vegetarian but I find it tastes a lot better, and I make my own mash instead of frozen like the recipe says x

This is so lovely.

I use turkey mince so not traditional but DD doesn't eat beef

I use shredded leftover meat from roast lamb and glugs of Worcestershire sauce. Yum.

Also even nicer second time around so perfect to be eaten at different times.

As a time saver I usually make a big mash with the meal the night before and use the leftover mash for the cottage pie-I find easier to spread etc at room temperature

BBC good food cottage pie every time. It makes enough for 10 so plenty for the freezer.

Love Shepherds pie 🤤.

500g lamb Mince
Tin of tomatoes
400ml chicken stock
Peas
Diced Carrots
Tomato puree
Salt
Onions
Lp sauce

Everything together in a large frying pan until reduced to how you want it. Then transfer to dish and put cheesey mash on top and bake until golden.

Deffo putting one on next week's meal plan!

Fry onion, garlic and finely diced carrots.

Add mince...fry until really brown.

Add Worcestershire sauce, tomato puree, stock and some dried thyme

Simmer

Then top with mash and cheese and bake until very golden and crispy

Cottage pie:

Brown mince with finely chopped red onion and beef oxo. Add mushrooms.

Add stock from beef oxo plus diced carrots, peas and sweet corn.

Once stock has nearly gone, add bisto gravy granules to thicken

Top with mash (I like a mix of sweet potato and white, only mashed with butter) and pop in the oven to heat when you’re ready to eat. I like it with a side of green beans and broccoli.

Brown beef mince, onion, finely chopped onion and celery. Add large glass of red wine, tomato purée, some thyme a and glug of Worcester Sauce.
Put in dish.
Mash potatoes with butter, 2 tablespoons of horseradish and a belated egg yolk (helps to make the top extra crispy).
Spoon over the meat and make as many peaks and tracks as possible with a folk!

Forgot the bit where you actually put it in the oven!

confusednorthner · 28/01/2020 21:06

Just eaten one and if I do say it myself it was delicious! Brown onion, carrot, celery add mince brown gently and add a beef stock pot with water. Left over night in fridge then added gravy today and topped with mash, gently sautéd leeks and cheese. Both dd and ds muttered a bit then had seconds and said it was yummy!

Raera · 29/01/2020 12:28

For the mash topping, use half and half potato and cauliflower, you really can't tell it's not just potato. Great for hiding veg

Sux2buthen · 29/01/2020 18:56

Some great tips, thanks allGrin I was supposed to do it today but I'm not too well so I'm going to have a read of these and take a crack at it in the next few days.

if using lamb, add an anchovy into the onion when frying it. it will melt and add depth to the lamb 🙂

formerbabe · 29/01/2020 19:55

Oh I'm definitely adding horseradish to my mash next time I make it. That sounds incredible!

Wheelerdeeler · 29/01/2020 19:59

Fry onion until very soft.

Brown mince.

Add chopped carrot.

1 tbsp boil

3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 chicken stock pot

400 mls boiling water

Simmer

Wheelerdeeler · 29/01/2020 19:59

Bovril

Marmite27 · 29/01/2020 20:03

Mince, slices onion, beef oxo, tbsp bisto. All in slow cooker.

It usually gets frozen in a take away tub. When required, frozen mince in an enamel pie tin. Cook in oven while making mash. Top with mash and pop back in oven for 10 minutes to crisp.

yellowallpaper · 29/01/2020 20:13

Low fat beef mince (lamb too fatty for me)
Chopped onion
Tbs flour
Seasoning

Fry in pan until soft and browned.

Add a stock cube and water, put in pie dish
Add finely chopped carrot, frozen peas, finely chopped celery, dash of Worcester sauce and some tomato paste.

Cook in a moderate oven 45 minutes.

Steam and mash potatoes with butter

Add to top of pie dish and increase heat to crisp and brown topping (15 mins).

Grated cheese on top is extra naughty and if you like baked beans you can add those to the pie dish.

okiedokieme · 29/01/2020 20:33

Mince, onion, carrots, parsnips (veg all cut up of course) sauté it all, add water to cover, a couple of oxo cubes, spoonful of mixed herbs, crushed garlic, cook on low, mean while boil potatoes and sweet potatoes (2/3 1/3) until cooked, mash. Put into oven dish and cook for 20 mins on gas mark 6/200 until crispy

If wanting veggie use green lentils and can of tomatoes with the veg and add chilli if desired

okiedokieme · 29/01/2020 20:34

Ps horseradish in the mash works well if you don't like sweet potatoes

moochew · 29/01/2020 21:55

Always use leftover meat from a roast - use the gravy too and leftover veg.
