Anyone heard of light corn syrup?

Millie1 · 30/09/2004 21:57

Or corn syrup for that matter? Is it an American product or can we buy it over here? Can I substitute something for it? So many questions... the icing instructions for my Thomas cake call for it to thin a couple of the colours and I'm kinda stuck.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

It's definitely American. They shove it in everything over there, that's why they're all such fat bloaters. (Sorry kateandthegirls and the rest of the US lot!)
Perhaps one of them can enlighten us?
Sugar as a substitute? Really not sure.

zaphod · 30/09/2004 22:07

I think it's golden syrup.

Skate · 30/09/2004 22:10

Yeah, I thought it was just the normal Tate and Lyle syrup in the green tin with gold writing!

Millie1 · 30/09/2004 22:13

Urgh ... golden syrup? In butter icing? OMG ... can't imagine how it would taste! What do you reckon? Think I'll leave it out ...

hoxtonchick · 30/09/2004 22:14

maybe glucose syrup?

Millie1 · 30/09/2004 22:21

That might be a bit less intense Hoxtonchick ... will try mixing a small amount to see what it tastes like. Wonder if Sainsburys will stock it or would it be the chemist?

Where's Kateandthegirls - couldn't she tell us!?

Millie1 · 30/09/2004 22:32

Maybe she'll pop in over the next 24 hrs or so?

Corn syrup is a sweetener made from corn. The light kind is really thin and pale. I don't have a lot of experience with golden syrup, but I'm pretty sure it's thicker than even dark corn syrup and I have absolutely no idea if the texture will be OK. They are definitely not the same! You'd probably need an American import store.

Somehow I always end up with one bottle of light and one of dark, and a tablespoon missing out of each. It's pretty nasty stuff, but the light is good for making shiny pretty things like icing or lollipops.

Millie1 · 30/09/2004 22:44

Thanks Californiagirl ... if it's only to thin the icing a bit, maybe I could just use a drop of milk instead.

Such a fuss about a cake!!

Don't worry, here I am.

Oh - California girl has beaten me to it!

Nome · 30/09/2004 23:06

My sister brought me a couple bottles of the stuf. I use it occasionally to make sorbet. If you're near Cambridge I'd be very happy to give you a bottle. (After all, how much sorbet can you be bothered to make! )

Nome · 30/09/2004 23:07

OUght to have said- my sister from the States...

colinsmommy · 01/10/2004 05:26

Ahem. Rowlers, I am American, hate maple syrup, and was brought up with corn syrup on my pancakes and anything else that requires syrup. I am not a fat bloater, even after the baby. It is not nasty for me, but don't reccommend it for its nutritional value.

tex111 · 01/10/2004 07:37

Rowlers, I grew up on the stuff same as collinsmommy and I'm not a fat bloater either! I think what you're thinking of is high fructose corn syrup which is a whole other kettle of fish and is actually quite dangerous. That's the stuff that is very cheap and gets put into so many comercially produced foods. Regular old corn syrup that we would have at home is sickly sweet but definitely not the same thing.

colinsmommy · 01/10/2004 16:18

Aww, tex111, you have made my day today. Someone else that loves corn syrup.

Millie1 · 01/10/2004 23:17

Nome ... finally getting logged on for the first time today! Thanks a million for your offer ... but I'm in N. Ireland so too far away. Am going to thin it with milk and hope for the best!

Colinsmommy / tex111...
Please accept my apologies!
Must THINK before I type ...
No offence intended
tex111, yep, I think it must be the high fructose stuff I was thinking of. Sure I saw a documentary a while ago claiming it was at the heart of a lot of health problems in the states.
Do you forgive me?

colinsmommy · 02/10/2004 15:57

No, never

Actually, I wasn't offended in the first place. I was laughing.

tex111 · 02/10/2004 16:55

Oh Rowlers, I was laughing too! You're right that the high fructose stuff along with the hydrogenated fats used in so much food in the States is a big cause of obesity and health problems. It's starting to change but I guess it'll take time. No offense taken.
