Too much orange juice when BFding???

Hi, any thoughts please? My dd has had really runny, very very frequent dirty nappies for about 3 weeks now. took her to docs today and although she is fine in herself, putting on weight etc, they have taken a stool sample, just in case. It's occurred to me today that it could be something i am eating/drinking. i do drink a lot of orange juice. is that classed as a citrus fruit because i know that these aren't recommended too much when bfding. does anybody know if this could be causing the poor little mite to have a bad tummy?

egypt - I don't know about runny nappies, but I do know that when I ate satsumas while feeding ds he would bring up the next two feeds, like clockwork. He was not otherwise a sicky baby (champion posseter, but this was proper vomit). It took me about two weeks to work it out and it was definitely, definitely the satsumas. I stopped eating them and he kept all his feeds down. He was obviously very sensitive to the citrus. I don't know if that could be causing your dd's nappies, but why not switch to apple juice for a week and see if anything improves?

thanks wilbur. i definitely will stop drinking the orange and see if that makes a difference. very interesting about the satsumas. same difference i spose with juice. thanks

btw, how do you tell the difference between proper vomit and possetting in a baby? dd sometimes brings up milk way after a feed and its more curdled and smells of vomit, rather than just milk. is that proper sick? if so i am making her sick too

i may have answered my question kind of, if anyone is interested: (searched net)
"Orange and other citrus fruits are great for a new mom to eat and drink, but they bother many young infants. For the first few months of your baby's life, her intestinal tract is immature and can be sensitive to certain foods, including citrus. If you notice she is unusually fussy or gassy, or is spitting up within a couple of hours of breastfeeding, try avoiding citrus until your baby's intestinal tract is more developed, around 4 months of age."

oh dear. have drank it since she was born.

no mention of dirty nappies but i guess it fits.

Egypt - not sure about the nappies, but stopping orange juice certainly reduced ds2's colic (although didn't eliminate it entirely) when he was littler. It does seem to be a common problem.

I think proper vomit you'd know about - ds2 projectile vomited while we were on holiday and I was just stunned at the volume! It was the ENTIRE feed (5 or 6 ounces of the stuff?) and just kept coming - everything was DRENCHED! He's also possetty and can sometimes posset after it's been digested a bit and smells a bit curdled, other times it can be immediately after swallowing so doesn't really smell.

With any food, some babies care and some babies don't. If you've been drinking the juice all along, it's unlikely to be causing a new problem, but there's certainly no harm in stopping and seeing what happens.

If the problem does clear up, wait a few weeks and try a glass of juice to make sure that was the problem. I was advised to try cutting out all dairy for two weeks to fix DD's crying jags. Sure enough, 2 weeks later she stopped crying. Only problem is, I hadn't cut out dairy products -- if I had done, I'd have been convinced that did it.

I agree with Californiagirl. If you've always had orange juice etc then it won't suddenly change her bowel habits. Actually, I cannot see how orange juice can get into your blood stream and then out of your breastmilk in sufficient quantities to cause an upset stomach.
