Cooking for friends this weekend - what would you choose as your ultimate indulgent dishes?

There will be four of us. I am vegetarian, they are not. I am happy to cook meat, but would like a harmonious meal rather than separate food.

So, for example, I would cook Moroccan spiced roast veg, with cous cous, feta, pomegranate and pistachio. Then serve with some roast lamb. Maybe with bread and dips as well.

What sort of food would you like to have cooked for you, along these lines?

Happy to spend all day preparing, but would prefer something that requires little effort once they are here.

We often have friends over who are vegetarian and it's a real pleasure to pick a food theme and try to make a lovely meal for them. Last time was Lebanese with about 7 or 8 dishes to pick from including babaganoosh (spelling?) and a gorgeous salad (fattoush or tabbouleh). Quite Moroccan in some ways but so flavourful and fun to make.

Pudding could be honey cake, pistachio ice cream, or Greek yogurt with figs and honey and toasted pistachio

Savoury dish - something with smoked aubergine? Or saganaki with the tomato sauce you'd normally with prawn saganaki, but without the prawns.

Or grilled smokey aubergine or grilled veggie skewers (courgette, aubergine, onion, mushroom, peppers) or a veggie moussaka?

Yes what about desert? I never care about the main, sedert is were it's at for me. Does it have to be on the same theme or can it be completely different?

Sorry to hijack but Alliejay81 HOW do you do fake Nandos? I think that would be a big hit in our house. Grateful for your tips

Oh my, that balela dish looks good.

Some lovely ideas, thank you.

I like the idea of a lemony pudding. I haven't made lemon meringue pie in years, very retro.

I'm thinking of stuffed aubergines, courgettes and tomatoes. Or maybe something like this

i had a really lovely filo milk puddingy thing at a Greek place in London recently ...Galaktoboureko...it was cinammonny and sticky and Dh had a orange cakewhich almost made me regret my choice, but he knows puddings are shared so it was alright!

SlowSigh · 21/01/2020 16:49

One of the teens made a filo custard pudding once. It was nice, but I felt too heavy after all the other food. I'm not a pudding lover though.

I'd recommend Gemista (stuffed peppers and tomatoes) veggie and Dolmadakia (stuffed vine leaves with mince). We cook them on top of potatoes and they are a meal in itself.

Or something lemony: Youvarlakia avgolemono (meatballs in a lemony sauce, sort of a "soup")
