Defrosting advice

Threeracers · 17/01/2020 12:26

I don’t really freeze anything and my freezer normally has peas and ice cubes only but someone gave me a shoulder of pork ten months ago and I froze it. I assume it’s still ok after ten months?

Is the safest way to defrost slowly in the fridge? How long would that take if it weighs 2.835 kg.

TIA

The freezer manufacturers probably advise max three months for storing meat. It's possibly ok, but personally I would bin it; I could not eat it with total confidence, especially as it is quite large and could make a lot of people ill!
(I'm probably over-fussy though)!

It will be safe to eat if frozen when still fresh, but possibly the texture will be different.
I'd defrost it overnight in the fridge, & bring it to room temperature before cooking. Have a good sniff - as you would any meat.

It would need longer than overnight to defrost in the fridge. That's about 6 lbs of solid meat. Maybe there's a calculator on Google.

  1. The meat will be perfectly OK.
  2. It will take a full day, at least, to defrost in the fridge. Personally, if you have a garage I would leave it there (well covered so you don't attract any wildlife). Or in an unheated kitchen overnight, then in to the fridge in the morning.

We had an 18 mth frozen leg of lamb last week. Tasted great and nobody was ill.
Our freezer is always set to -22 btw.
