Do I need to soak gammon overnight for campfire stew recipe?

I’m planning on making the campfire stew recipe from the pinch of nom cookbook and it says to soak the gammon overnight.

Do I really need to do this? I’ve never cooked gammon before and I’m planning on cooking it in the slow cooker. I was going to buy it tomorrow morning when I go shopping then start cooking it in the afternoon.

Has anyone cooked this recipe and just put the gammon in without soaking?

Also does it make a difference if it’s smoked or not? Or is it just personal preference?

Thanks for any advice

I find it far too salty if I don't soak it and change the water throughout soaking as suggested. Once forgot and it wasn't great.

The soaking is to reduce the salt in the gammon, so it is necessary. Change the water a couple of times, and soak for as long as is practical.

I did it once without soaking. It was edible but incredibly salty.

I've made it a few times without soaking. I've never soaked a gammon, the salt is what makes it so delicious! I do find the stew a bit heavy though so planning to only use half the gammon next time I make it.
