Would you be offended/revolted if we cooked veggie burgers on same barbie as the meat and used the same cooking utensils?

as an ex-vege - I would have been offened/revolted if you have done that and most other veges I know would have felt the same.

If you only have one barbie can you section off one area for vege stuff and keep a pair of tongs seperate?

ImBarryScott · 29/08/2007 14:21

get a disposable barbie?

moljam · 29/08/2007 14:22

offended and revolted.buy a cheap disposable one if one off.and use seperate utensils

chopster · 29/08/2007 14:24

I did have a friend who was never bothered. She always told me not to cook seperately for her, and she would jsut pick out the meat of whatever we were having. Still cooked veggie though.

SpawnChorus · 29/08/2007 14:24

DH is veggie and would greatly appreciate having his stuff cooked first or on an area that hasn't had meat on it. However he's realistic enough to know that this isn't always going to happen, and wouldn't get his knickers in a knot over it.

SpawnChorus · 29/08/2007 14:25

Lordy - I'm surprised people would actually be offended by it.

robin3 · 29/08/2007 14:27

Might cook the veggie stuff first....think message is pretty clear.

EricL · 29/08/2007 14:28

I wouldn't mind at all. It's only resting on a grill. I'm not that kind of annoying militant veggie though. That sniffy kind that kick up a fuss and refuse to eat stuff because meat has touched it or whatever really bug the hell out of me and give us a bad name.

I cook my stuff in the same pan as the meat and separate it at the end at home. I don't really care as long as i haven't bought and eaten it.

I also would eat meat if it was served to me in error as i would hate to think that it was going to be wasted and the animal was killed for nothing. I ate a sausage sandwich at the weekend cos someone didn't want it and it was going in the bin. At least it got back into the food chain.

I choose to be veggie cos i have the choice - if i don't then i will eat meat. This applies to situations such as above, being on holiday in some places where the only veggie things are stupid diet things like salads, and being on a desert island if i was hungry.

Mumpbump · 29/08/2007 14:30

I would cook the veggie stuff first and then do the meat. I wouldn't eat them if they had been cooked with meat.

EricL · 29/08/2007 14:31

You guys are not seriously telling me that you would expect a separate grill?

I can't believe i am hearing this.

This is what i was talking about just there.

That is just downright rude and selfish.

If someone is good enough to cater for me being a veggie and has invited me round for a meal i would never insist on this kind of nonsense.

Jesus.

aquababe · 29/08/2007 14:33

Those dispoable bbqs are the best otherwise the veggie often end up with cold food if it's been cooked first also hungry meat eaters often dip in and people rarely seem to have enough veggie to go around.
whats more many veggie burgers disappear down the cracks of the majority of BBQs. the disposable ones often have tighter mesh

I think offended might be too strong a word but I won't eat it if been cooked on the same area or handled with meaty utensils. just makes me feel unwell thinking about it

Mumpbump · 29/08/2007 14:35

I don't see that it is that difficult to cook veggie stuff first and assume that people clean their grills in between use as I do. I don't consider myself to be militant and happily cook meat for guests who come to dinner, but I wouldn't eat meat if it were served to me and would not eat something that has touched meat because it's a matter of principle.

Mumpbump · 29/08/2007 14:36

By the way, Eric, you come across as quite militant in your condemnation!!

moljam · 29/08/2007 14:36

i agree mumpbump

moljam · 29/08/2007 14:36

with the first bit

TheArmadillo · 29/08/2007 14:36

they do it because they hate other people obviously and just want to kick up a stink/make things as difficult as possible

Or it could be because using the same utensils/dishes/grills covers the food in meat juices which they don't want to eat. Cross contamination thing.

Would you have the same attitude if someone was doing it for religious reasons?

'I am vege unless someone serves me meat in which case I eat it' SO why are you a vege if you are happy to eat meat?

moljam · 29/08/2007 14:37

clap clap clap clap

lilibet · 29/08/2007 14:38

I would eat it if it had been cooked on the same grill but would prefer if it was kept away from the meat. Would probably not eat it if it had meat juices all over it but would not kick up a fuss and certainly wouldn't let the host know

I would be very impressed with your consideration if you had bought a disposable barbeque all for me

Mumpbump · 29/08/2007 14:38

Very eloquently expressed, Armadillo!

janeitebus · 29/08/2007 14:39

I'd be happiest if mine were just cooked to the side of the meat, in a separate area of the barbecue; wouldn't demand a separate grill or anything but would prefer them not to be all mixed in with the meat.

aquababe · 29/08/2007 14:40

I agree with the Armadillo

Blandmum · 29/08/2007 14:40

My father used to entertain some Ultra orthodox Jews. They were careful in the preparation of the food for these guests, but these people were highly observant, and didn't want to use plates that might have had non-kosher foods on them before. So they used to bring their own paper plates...problem solved in quite a polite and respectful way I though.

possibly the solution might be to take your own disposable BBQ if the thought of meat offends?

TheArmadillo · 29/08/2007 14:40

thanks

Most veges I know (and when I was one) also hate kicking up a fuss so are quite happy to eat potatoes/bread and salad at bbqs rather than put others out.

janeitebus · 29/08/2007 14:41

Oh and separate tongs should go without saying please!

lilibet · 29/08/2007 14:42

Armadillo, I am a veggie but was once invited to someone's hosue for a meal. I presumed that they knew I was and didn't point it out in advance. I was served meat in a casserole.

I ate the meat and made sure that I didn't offend her as she would have been so upset if she had known

A live person's feelings are more important than a dead animal's

My hope is to get people to treat their animals better by lowering the demand for meat and therefore hopefully end some of the dreadful practices that go on, upsetting someone isn't going to help me with that.
