sounds like the water isnt hot enough when you put it in. Make sure the water is boiling, then turn it down so it is simmering. Stir the water so that you are dropping the egg into a whirlpool. Easy!

funnypeculiar · 29/08/2007 13:09

water in fryingpan (deep) - plus either some vinegar (capful)or lots of salt.
Add egg in slow, controlled manner. Well try to.
Cook
Eat

funnypeculiar · 29/08/2007 13:09

Oh yes, water must be boiling

chopster · 29/08/2007 13:11

its the whirlpool that keeps the egg together though, so you shouldnt need vinegar or salt. But they do help. Just make sure you stir it furiously first. And the water isn't still bubbling when you put it in.

Thanks girls!

I'm famished, I'm on it, here I go!

It was a DISASTER! Egg soup again

I threw it away and used the same pot to fry an egg, it stuck to the bottom so I did another and the yolk burst as I broke the egg.

Not my egg day!

I'll show you how, when you come down to see BS.

Scoobi6 · 29/08/2007 13:58

After much trial and error I decided it works best with very fresh eggs (they seem to hold together well). I still do the whirlpool and vinegar for good measure but if the egg is fresh enough you can just sling it in simmering hot water and leave it a couple of minutes, no fuss, and it turns out fine

Bruce Springsteen and a poached egg together, now that has set me off......

Boil water in a saucepan. Make sure it is absolutely boiling. Crack egg open into the pan. Two minutes is enough.

WaynettaSlob · 29/08/2007 14:12

This is how Anthea does it

jumpyjan · 29/08/2007 14:27

Big pan of boiling water - add some malt vinegar to it (no idea why but it works).

Stir the water so that you get a whirlpool type thing going, crack an egg into a glass or cup and pour into the middle of the whirlpool. Leave for a couple of mins then remove with one of those big spoons with holes in.

mawbroon · 29/08/2007 14:31

Forget it unless the egg is really fresh.

funnypeculiar · 29/08/2007 14:45

Oh, no, frumpy - nothing worse than not being able to eat what you really want. Well obviously there is, but ykwim.

Does the egg split straight away?

frumpygrumpy · 29/08/2007 16:30

yes, straight away. a messy sneeze as someone eloquenty put it on another thread

This is fool proof I think:
saucepan (not frying pan) 3/4 full of boiling water. Then immediately before you break the egg in, make a whirlpool in the middle of the pan and drop the egg in to this, makes it quicker if the egg has already been broken in to a cup. It's best of egg not refridgerated. Couple of minutes.
Works every time once you've got the hang of it.
Frying pan users, are you advocating using a non stick pan, because I don;t understand how the egg wouldn;t stick to the bottom otherwise.

However Delia disagrees!

Dahlinks Dahlinks, you are all wrong, listen to non pisshead UCM

Put some clingfilm over a mug as in the mug you make a cup of tea not partner

drop of olive oil

make an egg sized bowl with fingers then simply put egg in, gather the clingfilm up and (assuming you have used enough clingfilm) drop it into boiling water for however long.

Simply pick up the clingfilm handle and unwrap and

VOILA too to you!!

Desiderata · 29/08/2007 19:50

Or get a plastic poached egg thingy from the thingy-dingy shop, crack an egg into each circular thingy, put a thingy full of water in each, and microwave on full for 42.75 seconds.

et voila!

Beenleigh · 29/08/2007 19:51

Naaaahhhh!

Beenleigh · 29/08/2007 19:52

naaaah at desi too, microwave? does this work? are they nice
first naaahhh was at clingfilm. Blimey, you learn summat new every day

Desiderata · 29/08/2007 19:56

Been, tbh, I hardly ever use the microwave. I just don't like the little radioactive buggers. Everytime I use it I feel like I ought to leave the room and locate the nearest municipal bunker.

That said, those little plastic egg poachers that are designed for the microwave do produce a very effective poached egg, with a fraction of the hassle. You have to experiment a bit to get the consistency right, though.
